Meta’s Ray-Ban Display update puts a CLEAR name on the long-running realistic-avatar bet: HOLOGRAM. After a short SELF-CAPTURE in the Meta AI app, callers on Meta Ray-Ban Display can appear as a PHOTOREAL face during WHATSAPP video calls — driven by VOICE, not a selfie cam propped on the table.

What Ships First — and When
Meta’s primary wording is unambiguous on SEQUENCE. Hologram begins rolling out in EARLY ACCESS on WhatsApp to Meta Ray-Ban Display users in the US later this FALL. The company describes a short self-capture, then a photoreal digital version of your face for hands-free CALLS — expressions inferred from what you say and how you say it. No month-day is named beyond that fall window.
Meta’s Connect roundup repeats the same timeline: Early Access on WhatsApp for Ray-Ban Display users in the US in the coming MONTHS, with Hologram also listed for META VR GLASSES when those ship next spring (Spring 2027, $1,299.99).

Full-Body on Meta VR Glasses — With Limits
UploadVR’s hands-on (September 24, 2026) is the CLEAREST secondary account of what the DEMO actually showed. On Ray-Ban Display, Hologram is shoulders-up and AUDIO-DRIVEN: a server-side generative diffusion model turns microphone audio into a 2D video stream for the person you call. On Meta VR Glasses — and eventually Quest 3, UploadVR reports — Hologram can appear FULL-BODY at TRUE SCALE inside a spatial call, with a switch from a 3D window into a life-size PRESENCE.
UploadVR is also clear about what launch Hologram is NOT. The Connect demo was a stereoscopic 3D video pixel stream, masked against the background — not a Gaussian splat, not a volume, and not a shipping Codec Avatars implementation. Walk around the billboard-like figure and the ILLUSION breaks because it stays front-facing. Meta told UploadVR it plans a later VOLUMETRIC upgrade with no public date, after which Hologram could supersede cartoon Meta Avatars and open to DEVELOPERS. Until then, treat the Spring 2027 VR LAUNCH as photoreal calling — not finished Codec Avatars research.

Why This Angle Matters Now
Today’s Metaverse Watcher posts already covered Meta’s cinema slate, FOV tools, and weight claims. Hologram is a DIFFERENT thread: presence for CALLS, not movies. The fall Early Access on Ray-Ban Display is the NEAR-TERM proof POINT; the Spring 2027 VR Glasses cut is the LARGER bet. Stick to Meta’s published words and UploadVR’s demo notes — and leave any Codec Avatars “finally here” headlines for when Meta actually ships volumetric co-presence.
