Horizon OS v2.9 Adds a Three-Window Manager on Quest Public Test Channel

Mixed News (Chris Steven, Sep 30) and Realovirtual both report that Horizon OS v2.9 is MOVING into Meta’s Public Test Channel. Meta’s Quest notes say the features “will become available starting the week of September 28, 2026 and will gradually roll out to people who are enrolled in the Public Test Channel.” Retail headsets are NOT on this build YET.

Three windows, MANAGED instead of shuffled

The HEADLINE change is a window manager reached from Quick Settings. Meta says windows now launch SPATIALLY, “making it easier to drag and POSITION your apps.” Owners can place THREE windows side by side or STACK them, cycle a stack by clicking the top of each panel, and see every open window in the manager. Mixed News frames three panels as a working LIMIT — enough for a browser, a store page, and a video together — not an unlimited desktop clone.

Wall snap replaces the old standalone anchor toggle

Windows “now ATTACH to surfaces more RELIABLY,” Meta says. Push a panel close to a WALL and it SNAPS into place. The standalone anchoring option is GONE from the control bar; each window instead gets a dedicated GRAB handle, with buttons for advanced options or close. Meta does not call that removal a loss, and Mixed News notes owners who anchored panels to non-wall surfaces will LEARN first whether snapping covers every prior case.

Quest 3 and 3S: QR scan, Surface input, Lying Down

Realovirtual’s rundown of the same PTC notes adds several Quest 3 / 3S TOOLS. A built-in QR CODE scanner opens from Quick Settings, the Camera app, Browser search, or by asking Meta AI (“Hey Meta, open QR code scanner”). The Surface KEYBOARD and TRACKPAD now work in fully virtual environments and in PASSTHROUGH; Meta still labels that stack EXPERIMENTAL. Lying Down MODE leaves the experimental label and moves into general Settings under accessibility and mobility.

Home environments, boundary recovery, searchable settings

v2.9 also RESTORES some classic VR Home environments in a redesigned form, adds in-headset TROUBLESHOOTING for unresponsive Touch CONTROLLERS (Settings → Devices → Controllers), and improves BOUNDARY RECOVERY if a SETUP or space SCAN is INTERRUPTED — the headset falls back to the previous boundary or a default stationary one. Settings search can surface Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, Travel Mode, Passthrough, and similar controls even OFFLINE.

Still a test-channel BUILD

None of this is on retail Quest headsets yet. The Public Test Channel is OPT-IN through Meta’s enrolment page, and Meta has published no date for when v2.9 REACHES everyone else. Mixed News notes the most recent GENERAL release was v2.7, pushed from the week of August 17, 2026. Meta names Quest 3 and 3S for several v2.9 CHANGES, but does not publish a clean device list for the window manager itself — treat that as UNCONFIRMED until owners outside the programme report.

For Metaverse Watcher readers, the SIGNAL is practical: Horizon OS is finally MANAGING panels instead of only PLACING them. Three SIMULTANEOUS windows is a modest CAP, but it is the difference between a PRODUCTIVITY layout and constant panel shuffling. Enrol only if you ACCEPT pre-release SOFTWARE; everyone else WAITS for the UNDATED general BUILD.
