Two days out from launch, The Mac Observer’s September 12 readout draws a sharper line than Apple’s keynote did: an original M2 Apple Vision Pro gets almost all of visionOS 27 on Monday, including the Siri AI beta. Only two Apple Intelligence features stay behind the M5 gate.
Apple locked the public date at its September 9 “Surprise and shine” event: Monday, September 14, 2026, free for Vision Pro owners, alongside iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate. The release candidate is build 24M362, seeded September 9. We covered the calendar lock and the separate Siri AI beta/caps story earlier this week; today’s useful delta is the hardware split Mac Observer pulled from Apple’s published requirements.
What M5 keeps for itself
Apple’s advanced on-device tier on Vision Pro stops at the M5. The two features that require it:
- Siri voice customization — pitch, speed, tone, and accent
- Improved on-device Dictation
Everything else in Apple Intelligence that Apple lists for Vision Pro is framed as M2 and later. That same advanced-on-device floor is how Apple describes the new iPhone 18 Pro class on iPhone; on Mac it needs M3 or later with enough unified memory. On Vision Pro, it is simply the M5 headset.
What an M2 headset still gets Monday
Mac Observer’s inventory matches the feature set 9to5Mac summarized from the September 9 event: Siri AI with Visual Intelligence, panoramas turned into spatial Environments, curved windows, the new Thórsmörk Environment, extra-small widgets, a redesigned Control Center, glance-to-expand notifications, Spatial Mac previewing, Web Environments in Safari, and Dwell Control without a timer. Apple’s Wi‑Fi claim — startup and connect “up to three times faster” — was measured in August 2026 on an M2 Vision Pro comparing visionOS 26.6 to a visionOS 27 prerelease build. Apple has not published an equivalent M5 figure.
One oddity Mac Observer flags: Apple published no visionOS 27 compatibility footnote of the kind it attaches to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS. The only hardware lines that appear are the Apple Intelligence floor at M2 and the advanced on-device tier at M5. Release time on September 14 is still unpublished; Apple’s usual pattern is roughly 10:00 a.m. Pacific.
EU carve-out still favors the headset
Siri AI ships in English beta on September 14, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish listed for October. In the European Union, Apple’s exclusion language hits iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS — not macOS or visionOS. A Vision Pro set to a supported language can access Siri AI at launch while an iPhone in the same room cannot. That platform split was already in Apple’s notes; Mac Observer’s Monday checklist just makes the M2 path explicit for people who never bought the M5 refresh.
Bottom line for launch day: install if you are on M2. You are not waiting on a second headset for Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, or the spatial UI work. You are waiting on M5 only if voice customization and the improved on-device Dictation model are the features you came for — and Apple has not said whether that advanced tier will ever land on the original chip.
