SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta Stops Frame Limiter From Clamping Steam Frame VR Streams

Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.2 BETA finally names the STREAMING PATH Frame owners have been waiting for: VR titles sent from a Steam Machine to a Steam Frame. The RELEASE NOTES — published September 25, 2026 and covered by Mixed News on September 27 — say Valve “Fixed the FRAME LIMITER incorrectly applying to VR titles when streaming from Steam Machine to Steam Frame.” That is the FIRST time Valve’s NOTES have called out that HOST-to-headset route by name.

A FRAME LIMITER makes sense on a living-room CONSOLE: cap the output, quiet the fans, keep power draw predictable. A VR title has to HOLD the headset’s own REFRESH RATE instead. Valve’s wording means the limiters were reaching those STREAMED VR sessions when they should not. The same BUILD also fixes the “Disable Frame Limiter” toggle failing when VRR is switched on.

What Valve Fixed — and What It Did Not Claim

The FIX is narrow. It does not announce that Machine-to-Frame VR streaming is a finished, public feature. On September 19, Valve still said a Steam Machine could not stream VR games to the headset yet, while calling the console an ideal HOST for it. SteamOS 3.9.2 patches the LIMITER BUG on that PATH for BETA and preview channel users; it is not a LAUNCH of the feature itself.

Headless Remote Play Returns

The same build fixes Steam REMOTE PLAY on a Steam Machine that boots with no EXTERNAL DISPLAY attached. Owners on Valve’s discussion board had been reporting the problem since mid-August: wake the machine with nothing plugged in and it vanishes from the REMOTE PLAY list. Workarounds included an HDMI dummy plug or Wake-on-LAN. Valve’s note covers Remote Play only — not every other HEADLESS behavior.

Where 3.9.2 Sits in the Branch Tree

SteamOS 3.9.2 ships on the beta and preview CHANNELS. STABLE users received SteamOS 3.8.28 the same day; 3.9 is a larger REBASE — Linux kernel 7.2, Plasma 6.7.3 in Desktop Mode, and preliminary hibernation that is not yet exposed in Game Mode. GamingOnLinux also lists regression fixes from earlier 3.9 previews, including unexpected hibernation wakes on Steam Machine and virtual keyboard input for some languages.

Opt in through Settings → System → System Update Channel. Valve has given no date for 3.9 to reach STABLE. Until then, the FRAME LIMITER fix exists only for owners who switched channels. Steam Deck HQ also summarized the beta on September 26; for the VR streaming line, Mixed News and GamingOnLinux match Valve’s “incorrectly applying” wording.
