Meta Says Its Roadmap Covers ‘Different Audience Segments,’ but Won’t Promise a Gaming-Focused Quest

META has a NEW HEADSET coming, and it says that HEADSET is NOT a Quest. Asked by Road to VR whether a future Quest focused on GAMING is planned, a META spokesperson gave a STATEMENT that PROMISES a ROADMAP but does not PROMISE a gaming device.

“We are continuing to explore a ROBUST ROADMAP of VR devices tailored to different audience segments as the market grows and matures,” the spokesperson said. Road to VR’s Scott Hayden, in an opinion piece published October 8, pointed out the obvious gap: the STATEMENT does NOT commit to a GAMING-FIRST headset.

VR Glasses Are Positioned as Glasses

Meta VR Glasses are a COMPUTE-PUCK-TETHERED mixed reality headset priced at $1,300 and due in SPRING 2027. They run the same OPERATING SYSTEM as Quest and can pair with Touch Plus controllers to play the QUEST 3 CATALOG, but they are HAND-TRACKING-FIRST, have a NARROWER FIELD OF VIEW, and are pitched at PRODUCTIVITY, communication, and casual media rather than GAMES.

Asked why the device is not called Quest Air, Quest 4, or Quest Pro 2, Meta Vice President of VR Ryan CAIRNS told Road to VR: “The thing we wanted to signal with the product is: it’s a DIFFERENT product for a different market. It reads like GLASSES, so we wanted to have it in the spectrum of GLASSES that go from audio to full immersive VR Glasses.”

The Context Behind the Question

The question matters because of what Meta did to its content pipeline this year. According to Road to VR, Meta SHUT DOWN three internal STUDIOS, Armature Studio, Twisted Pixel, and Sanzaru Games, and pulled FUNDING from partner projects, including a reported Harry Potter game from Skydance Games and a “major project” from POLYARC, which later CLOSED. CTO Andrew BOSWORTH described the change by saying the “gravy train has come to a stop.”

The ripple effects reach INDEPENDENT STUDIOS too. Schell Games CEO Jesse Schell told Road to VR that headset VR was once 80% of the studio’s work and is now “more like 30%.” Mighty Coconut, maker of Walkabout Mini Golf, announced a SECOND round of LAYOFFS affecting 10 people.

Road to VR also notes that Meta has SHUTTERED Horizon Workrooms and SEPARATED Horizon Worlds from Quest, making it a NON-VR social platform.

The Timing Problem

QUEST 3 is now THREE years old, the same age Quest 2 was when Quest 3 replaced it. BOSWORTH said earlier this year that Meta had TWO VR headsets planned, and in JULY said “multiple” next-gen headsets were in the works. One of them became VR Glasses, previously codenamed PROJECT PHOENIX. Meta has not said what happened to the OTHERS.

Metaverse Watcher Take

The spokesperson’s wording is CAREFUL, and that is the story. “Different audience segments” leaves ROOM for a gaming headset without committing to one. Meanwhile Meta is still INVESTING in content that suits the new device: it is streaming LIVE 180-degree college football on Quest with ESPN and promising 100+ LIVE sporting events in 2027, according to Road to VR. Developers such as Kluge Interactive are adding hand tracking to GAMES like Synth Riders so they are READY for VR Glasses on DAY ONE.

The practical read for buyers: Quest 3 and 3S remain the ONLY current Meta headsets built around games, and Meta has given NO DATE, name, or confirmation for a SUCCESSOR. How VR Glasses sell next year will likely DECIDE whether that changes.
