Code in Google Translate 10.32.66 points at a glasses-only “Listening area” for Live Translate on Android XR — Front only versus Surrounding area. Google has not shipped it.
Android Authority dug into Google Translate version 10.32.66 and found strings for a new Listening area (Glasses only) control under Translation settings. Road to VR and VR.org both carried the find. The setting is work-in-progress code, not a Google announcement, and Authority’s own caveat still applies: APK strings often die before release.
Front only vs. Surrounding area
Authority’s teardown lists two modes behind the Listening area header:
- Front only — translate speech directly in front of the wearer, the one-on-one conversation lane with background noise filtered out.
- Surrounding area — translate speech in the nearby area, described as potentially using the full microphone array on Android XR devices.
That split is the interesting part. Live translation demos usually fail on which voice the mic locks, not on whether the model can render a sentence. Exposing beamforming as a user toggle is Google admitting the platform cannot reliably infer whether you mean the person across the table or the room they are sitting in. VR.org’s read of the same strings makes that design admission explicit.
Glasses only — and the glasses are not for sale yet
The parenthetical matters. The strings are labeled for Android XR glasses, not for the only shipping Android XR headset: Samsung’s Galaxy XR. Fall frames from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker (with Kering/Gucci designs also reported in development) remain announced rather than dated. Google has shown live translation on prototype glasses at I/O 2025 and Voice Translate-style demos into MWC 2026; this Listening area control is the mic-policy layer those demos never had to expose on stage.
Road to VR notes the competitive frame: Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses already ship a live translation path closer to Front only — translated audio in open-ear speakers, with a transcript path on the companion phone. Google’s Surrounding area mode would be the broader ambient bet if it ships.
What this does and does not mean
Confirmed from the teardown and secondary reporting: Translate 10.32.66 contains a Glasses-only Listening area string with Front only and Surrounding area options; Authority, Road to VR, and VR.org all treat it as unfinished code. Google has not announced the feature, named a device, or set a ship window for it.
The practical signal for Android XR builders is older and more reliable than any keynote: flagship phone apps are where this platform gets assembled in public. Spotify strings aimed at glasses showed up the same way earlier this summer. Whether Listening area lands inside Translate alone or later as an Android XR SDK capture mode will decide if every conversational app has to reinvent the same mic choice.
