Microsoft is SHUTTING DOWN the LAST piece of its Mesh METAVERSE bet. Immersive events in Microsoft Teams, the 3D event format that REPLACED Microsoft Mesh less than a year ago, will RETIRE on APRIL 2, 2027. AVATARS in Teams go WITH it. The date now sits at the top of Microsoft’s own admin planning page and its user support guide. BOTH say the feature will stay AVAILABLE and supported, “including security updates and necessary fixes,” UNTIL that day.
The formal notice went to IT admins as Microsoft 365 Message Center item MC1499189, which was added on October 12, 2026, according to a copy of the notice published by PUPUWEB. Microsoft’s STATED reason is BRIEF. It says it “regularly evaluates its product portfolio” and has decided to “focus our efforts on broader collaboration and communication experiences across Microsoft Teams.” XR analyst Antony Vitillo (SkarredGhost) put it more BLUNTLY on X this MORNING: “RIP Immersive events in Microsoft Teams. RIP Mesh.”
What goes away, and what stays
According to the Message Center text, users will NO LONGER be able to CREATE or JOIN immersive events after retirement, and they will NOT be able to use Avatars in Teams. Microsoft says standard Teams meetings, webinars, town halls, chat and channels are NOT affected. The notice lists event organizers, admins and end users who rely on the features for “events, training, engagement activities, or collaboration scenarios” as the groups affected. It tells IT to review USAGE, find dependent workflows and “plan alternatives.” Microsoft does NOT name an ALTERNATIVE.
The TWO documents differ SLIGHTLY on TIMING. The Message Center notice gives a release window of April 1, 2027, while the Learn and support pages both say April 2. In either case, admins have roughly FIVE and a HALF months.

A short life after Mesh
Immersive events were meant to be where Mesh LIVED ON. Microsoft’s Mesh documentation records that on December 1, 2025, the company RETIRED the Immersive space (3D) view in Teams meetings, Mesh on the web, and the Mesh PC and Quest apps. Those were “replaced by immersive events in Teams, where we are continuing to invest.” Under the old setup, the 3D view handled up to 16 PEOPLE in a meeting, and Mesh events handled up to 330 ATTENDEES.
The INVESTMENT is now ending. Measured from the Mesh shutdown to April 2, 2027, the successor gets about 16 MONTHS before it is RETIRED too. With Avatars also going, Teams will have NO 3D PRESENCE feature left that Microsoft has announced.

The Quest question Microsoft never settled
For XR BUYERS, the most TELLING detail is on Microsoft’s own admin page, which was last updated on October 9. Near the top, a note says the feature “is now Generally Available for Teams users on PC, Mac, and Meta Quest devices.” That is a CLEAR claim. The page also tells admins how to deploy MANAGED Quest headsets for the “Microsoft Teams Immersive app,” with Intune device management, Entra conditional access and Meta Horizon managed services. Further DOWN, the same page’s platform section says: “Quest isn’t yet supported for Immersive events.” It lists the Quest app as “coming SOON.” Both statements CANNOT be true at once.
The support guide SIDES with the FIRST version, telling attendees they can join “via the Microsoft Teams Immersive app on Meta Quest 3.” Whichever paragraph is CURRENT, the result for enterprise buyers is the SAME. A company that bought Quest 3 headsets for Teams events in 2026 now has a FIRM END DATE for that use. Microsoft’s minimum desktop requirement for immersive events was MODEST, at a 4-core CPU and 8 GB of RAM. The feature also REQUIRED a commercial Teams license and was NOT supported in GCC, GCCH, sovereign cloud or EDU tenants.
The Metaverse Watcher read
This is a CLEAN ending, not a quiet one. Microsoft has given admins a DATE, a SUPPORT promise and a Message Center ID. The RECORD it leaves is LESS flattering. Microsoft stopped making HoloLens 2 in 2024, SHUT Mesh as a standalone app in December 2025, moved the experience INTO Teams, and has now SCHEDULED the END of that too. The company’s own Quest documentation was still CONTRADICTING itself as of last week.
The broader signal is about WHERE workplace XR is going. Enterprise 3D meetings are NOT winning inside the BIGGEST collaboration suite on the market. The work-focused momentum in XR has moved to purpose-built TRAINING, DESIGN review and FIELD-SERVICE tools, and to AI glasses that keep people in the room rather than putting them in an avatar lobby. Teams customers who still RUN immersive events should EXPORT their custom environments and MEDIA and line up a replacement BEFORE April. Microsoft says MORE guidance is coming, and its notice is CLEAR that the features themselves will NOT return.
