UploadVR covered the trailer today (September 2, 2026): the first extended gameplay look at the experience, with ship systems failing and Ryland Grace working the problem alongside Rocky. TechTimes and ComingSoon reported the same package a day earlier on September 1—Weir on the story, Ortiz back as Rocky, and a fall window across Quest, Pico, and Android XR.
This is not a retelling. Weir wrote an original chapter set on the Eridani leg between the climax and the epilogue—the stretch the novel and film skip. You play as Grace, diagnose failures, and keep the cargo alive with Rocky’s help. James Ortiz reprises Rocky with a fresh performance on the same film character model. In a statement released with the trailer, Ortiz said playing Rocky again has been “really special,” and that fans will be able to “step inside” the world of Project Hail Mary.
Color passthrough is required: Quest 3/3S, Pico, and Android XR headsets that can blend the Hail Mary into the room. Older monochrome-passthrough kits are out of scope for the MR design. Preorders are due soon; the Meta Quest wishlist is live. Pricing and length are still TBD—Maze Theory says more on depth, price, and preorder specifics is coming in the weeks ahead.
The pedigree helps—Weir on the page, Ortiz in the room, a studio that has already shipped licensed VR with original cast work. Still, autumn 2026 is crowded, and a trailer plus a wishlist is not a reviewable build. Worth tracking; not worth pre-ordering on vibes alone until length and price land.
