Mixed-News (Chris Steven, October 3, 2026) flags a practical Steam Frame STREAMING catch: Valve’s latest pass at ERROR 17 asks owners to UPDATE BOTH ENDS, and both halves sit on OPT-IN betas.

SteamOS 0.4.3 tells Frame owners that “on the PC, you must also opt into SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to REDUCE ‘Error 17’ connection issues.” SteamVR 2.18.2 mirrors the REQUIREMENT the other way: Frame users “should also opt into SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher” for the same FAULT. The two NOTES landed a minute apart on October 1 (18:22 and 18:23 UTC), each pointing at the other.
Third patch in three days

The code first showed up in SteamOS 0.4.2 on September 29 as “improved connection RELIABILITY while streaming (including ‘protocol error 17’).” Both October 1 releases add “further VR streaming reliability improvements, including ADDITIONAL FIXES for ‘Error 17’” — Valve’s THIRD pass in three DAYS. Mixed-News notes Valve still says REDUCE and additional fixes, not FIXED, and has published no public DEFINITION of what Error 17 is or when it counts as gone.
Default channels get neither half

SteamOS 0.4.3 reaches the headset through Settings → System → System Update Channel and is labeled as including features “still being TESTED.” SteamVR 2.18.2 sits on the SteamVR beta BRANCH any Steam account can join from the title’s PROPERTIES. Owners who stay on either DEFAULT channel get neither half of the handshake.
A Frame already on the beta CHANNEL ships SteamVR 2.18.2 inside the headset IMAGE, so the headset side can be CURRENT even when the PC is not. A Frame that stopped on SteamOS 0.4.2 still carries SteamVR 2.18.1 on-device — one more reason BOTH ends matter.
What Metaverse Watcher already covered
This site already logged SteamOS 0.4.3 for its up-to-12% BATTERY claim and SteamVR 2.18.2 for Steam Frame EYE OPENNESS over OSC. Today’s beat is the STREAMING reliability THREAD those same betas share: Error 17 is not finished by UPDATING one end alone. If the pair does not HELP, Valve points owners at the SteamVR Bug Report forum and says replies on the announcement itself are NOT TRACKED.
