SteamVR Beta 2.18.2 Broke Linux Streaming Green or Black—Fix Stays 2.18.2

Mixed-News reports on October 2, 2026 that SteamVR beta 2.18.2 turned Linux VR streaming into a solid green or black headset IMAGE—and that Valve’s same-day HOTFIX kept the build number at 2.18.2—the SAME digits—so the version string alone cannot PROVE you have the REPAIR.

The bad build landed at 18:22 UTC on October 1. Within an hour, owners on Valve’s SteamVR bug forum described a consistent PATTERN: head tracking, controllers, and positional audio still WORKED, the PC preview window showed a CORRECT frame, and the headset itself showed one FLAT colour. Rolling back to the release branch RESTORED the picture; returning to beta brought the green—or black—BACK.

That FAILURE hit Steam Link on Meta Quest and streaming to Steam Frame the SAME way. Mixed-News notes reports across Nobara, Arch, Gentoo, Kubuntu, and a Steam Machine on SteamOS 3.9 under the SAME beta, on both Radeon and GeForce HARDWARE. There was no tidy vendor PATTERN—some saw GREEN, some saw BLACK.

The Fix Stayed Inside the Broken Version

Valve’s SteamVR news post for beta 2.18.2 lists, among Streaming changes: “(11:00 PM UTC time) Hotfix to resolve green/black screen issues with SteamLink on Linux.” GamingOnLinux published the SAME changelog on October 2. The original announcement timestamp remains 18:22 UTC, so the repair line REACHED owners more than four hours after the update that BROKE them.

A SteamVR hub account with the developer badge first told owners Valve KNEW the issue and would FIX it shortly, then returned with “Fix is live, still under version 2.18.2” and told them to FORCE the update by verifying SteamVR’s installed files in Steam. That verification is the ONLY practical way to tell the fixed 2.18.2 from the BROKEN one.

Until that verify completes, the version string is USELESS as a signal. Owners who stay on beta without checking files can still RUN the payload that blanked the DISPLAY. There is no 2.18.3. The public fix for a public regression sits inside the build number that CAUSED it, which makes a casual glance at SteamVR’s about screen a TRAP.

What Else Shipped in 2.18.2

Beyond the Linux hotfix, Valve’s notes add FURTHER VR streaming reliability work—including additional fixes for “Error 17”—and expose eye-openness when streaming from Steam Frame via OSC (requires SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher). SteamVR itself gains dashboard recenter FIXES, a Throttling Behavior setting REPAIR, controller-binding loads for titles such as Google Earth VR and Thumper, and better focus behaviour on grab/resize HANDLES.

Steam Frame users chasing Error 17 are told to PAIR the SteamVR beta with SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher on the headset’s OS Beta branch. That is a SEPARATE reliability track from the green/black regression, but it is why many Linux and Frame owners LIVE on the same beta channel that briefly went DARK.

Keep This Apart From the Nvidia 580 Break

Mixed-News SEPARATES this regression from Valve’s recent confirmation that Nvidia’s 580 driver branch breaks Steam Link VR on Linux. That fault is Nvidia-SPECIFIC. The 2.18.2 green/black bug took out Radeon machines TOO, and neither the patch note nor the open Linux tracker report names an encoder, driver branch, or graphics STACK.

A tracker report filed at 20:36 UTC on October 1 gives a clean before-and-after on one MACHINE—an RTX 4070 SUPER under CachyOS that streamed to a Steam Frame correctly on 2.18.1 on September 30, then showed solid GREEN on 2.18.2 the next day. It attaches four crash dumps, three from the SteamVR compositor, and still REMAINS OPEN.

Only the beta branch CARRIED 2.18.2. The prior beta, 2.18.1 (September 23), cleared right-eye ghosting for many REPORTERS. The stable branch never shipped 2.18.2 at ALL. As of Mixed-News’s October 2 check, 2.18.2 was still the newest BETA—leaving the fix for owners to FORCE rather than discover by a new version BUMP.

If you stream SteamVR from Linux to a Quest or a Steam Frame and still see a flat COLOUR after opting into beta, VERIFY SteamVR’s files and confirm you pulled the POST-hotfix payload. Metaverse Watcher will WATCH for a numbered follow-up build that makes the repair OBVIOUS without a file-integrity DANCE. Until then, treat “2.18.2” as a LABEL, not a GUARANTEE.
