Valve’s Steam Frame now has its FIRST line in the Steam Hardware & Software Survey, and it arrived LATE. The September 2026 table, published at the start of October, originally had no Frame row at all. A revised version now credits the HEADSET WITH 0.41 PERCENT of Steam accounts that had a VR headset connected, according to a VR.org comparison of archived and live copies of Valve’s survey page.
What CHANGED on the page
VR.org reports that MIXED and PC Guide both read the table on October 2 with NO Steam Frame entry and the “Other” bucket at 1.93 percent. An Internet Archive capture from October 4 still showed that version. By October 6 the live page was DIFFERENT in three rows: “Other” fell to 1.49, a NEW “VALVE Steam Frame” row appeared at 0.41, and HTC’s Vive Focus Vision moved from 0.26 to 0.29. The drop in “Other” EXACTLY matches the two gains, which points to a RECLASSIFICATION of headsets Valve had already counted, not NEW DATA.
The restated change column gives the Frame a gain of 0.39 points, implying 0.02 percent in August, before PUBLIC SALES began. Valve does not explain those August units.
How to READ 0.41 percent
The figure places the Frame 18th of 28 named rows, one spot below the ORIGINAL 2019 Oculus Quest at 0.43, per VR.org. That works out to roughly ONE Frame in every 244 VR headsets in the SAMPLE. Because only 1.35 percent of surveyed Steam users report ANY VR headset, the Frame represents about one SURVEYED MACHINE in 18,000.
Context MATTERS here. Valve sells the Frame through a RESERVATION QUEUE, with the first purchase emails sent on September 18. That left roughly 13 DAYS for units to be bought, delivered, and connected before the month closed. VR.org notes that only QUEST 3 GAINED MORE share in September, which says more about the Frame’s EARLY PACE than about its INSTALLED BASE.
There are also LIMITS on what the survey can show. Valve describes participation as “optional, and anonymous,” and it DOES NOT PUBLISH how headsets are DETECTED. It is UNCLEAR whether a Frame used STANDALONE, away from a PC, is counted at all.
The NEXT reading
The October survey, due in early November, will be the Frame’s first FULL month in the table. That is the number that can establish a TREND. For now, 0.41 percent is a single, revised data point from a headset that most reservation holders still do not have.
