Steam Frame vs Quest 3: Which VR Headset to Buy in 2026

Updated October 19, 2026. Prices are U.S. list prices unless noted. We will revise this guide when Valve or Meta changes a price, a shipping window or a key spec.

The Steam Frame and the Meta Quest 3 are the two standalone headsets most buyers are weighing this fall, and they are built for DIFFERENT people. The short answer: buy the Quest 3 if you want the cheapest complete VR and mixed reality package with the BIGGEST standalone library. Reserve a Steam Frame ONLY if you already own a capable gaming PC, your library lives on Steam, and wireless PC VR is the main thing you will do. Below is the full comparison, with every number sourced.

Price: The Real Gap Is Wider Than the Sticker

Valve priced the Steam Frame on September 14, 2026: $1,059 for the 256GB kit and $1,299 for the 1TB kit. Both include the headset, two Steam Frame Controllers, the 6GHz wireless adapter and a copy of Half-Life: Alyx, which cannot be redeemed a second time by someone who already owns it. Valve’s page states that the power supply is NOT included. Its own 45W unit costs $29, and the $59 Ergonomic Accessories Kit adds the top strap, controller hand straps and an extended light blocker, according to VR.org’s launch report. A base Frame with both add-ons comes to $1,147 before tax. Outside the U.S., the 256GB kit lists at £889, €1,049, C$1,529 and A$1,609.

The Quest 3 now costs $599.99 for its only model, 512GB. Meta raised it from $499.99 on April 19, 2026, blaming a surge in memory chip prices, and raised the Quest 3S to $349.99 (128GB) and $449.99 (256GB) at the same time. The Quest 3 ships with its controllers and a charger. On list price alone the Frame costs $459 more; once a charger and comfort kit are added, the difference is closer to $550, with HALF the built-in storage.

Availability: One Is on Shelves, One Is a Queue

You cannot simply ORDER a Steam Frame. Valve sells it through a reservation list, with purchase emails going out in waves since September 18 and 72 hours to check out once one arrives before the slot passes to someone else. In October, Valve began telling holders whether to expect a headset by December 2026 or at some point in 2027, as we covered in our report on the reservation windows. The Quest 3 has been in stock since October 2023. If you want a headset for the holidays and do not already hold an early reservation, that alone may DECIDE it.

Comfort and Weight

This is the Frame’s CLEAREST physical advantage. Valve puts the front unit at about 185 grams and the full worn headset at about 440 grams, because the 21.6 Wh battery sits at the back of the strap as a counterweight. The Quest 3 weighs 515 grams with its stock cloth strap, and most of that hangs in front of your eyes. Road to VR measured slightly different Frame figures (190g and 435g), but the conclusion is the same: the Frame is about 75 grams lighter and much better BALANCED. Its WEAK spot is that the default box has NO top strap, which Valve sells separately.

Display, Lenses and Eye Tracking

On paper the image is close. Both use LCD panels behind pancake lenses: 2160 × 2160 per eye on the Frame, 2064 × 2208 on the Quest 3, with a similar field of view. The Frame adds an experimental 144Hz mode and, more importantly, EYE TRACKING. The Quest 3 has none. Valve uses eye tracking for foveated streaming, sending the sharpest part of the video stream to wherever you are looking, which is why reviewers rate its PC streaming so highly. The Quest 3 relies on fixed foveated rendering, which always prioritizes the center of the display.

PC VR Streaming: The Frame’s Reason to Exist

The Frame ships with a Wi-Fi 6E adapter that plugs into your PC and gives the stream its own 6GHz link, while the headset’s second radio stays on your home network. Road to VR found that link so RELIABLE it was hard to tell apart from a WIRED connection. Valve has also confirmed that streaming without the adapter is supported if a 5GHz router is wired directly to the PC, as we reported in our Wi-Fi-only streaming explainer.

The Quest 3 is no slouch here. It streams PC VR through Meta’s Link cable, Air Link, Valve’s own Steam Link app and the third-party Virtual Desktop app. Over a strong Wi-Fi 6E router those options work well, but they share the router with everything else in the house. Owners comparing the two are NOT unanimous: some prefer the Quest 3’s color and brightness in Virtual Desktop even while praising the Frame’s lighter fit.

Standalone Games and Apps

Without a PC, the Quest 3 is the STRONGER headset. Meta’s Horizon Store remains the largest library of games built for standalone VR, including its exclusives. The Frame runs SteamOS and can play Steam games on the headset itself, using compatibility layers for flatscreen and x86 titles. Valve’s Steam Frame Verified list passed 200 games in early October, but only about 70 of them are VR-only, as we detailed in our Steam Frame Verified analysis. Purchases do NOT cross over: a game you bought on the Quest store has to be bought again on Steam to play on the Frame.

Mixed Reality and Passthrough

If mixed reality matters to you, this section SETTLES it. The Quest 3 has FULL-COLOR passthrough and a depth sensor, and most of its mixed reality apps are built around them. The Frame’s tracking cameras give MONOCHROME passthrough only. Valve lists the third-party Arcturus Vision Camera, which attaches through the Frame’s front expansion port and adds color passthrough; UploadVR put its price at $149, per VR.org. That is another add-on on top of a more expensive headset.

Battery Life

The Frame has the larger battery, 21.6 Wh against 19.44 Wh, but NOT the longer RUNTIME. Engadget got about two hours of video and light gaming and under 90 minutes in Half-Life: Alyx, and Road to VR measured one to 1.5 hours of mixed use. Meta rates the Quest 3 at about 2.2 hours. Battery life was the MOST-CITED weakness in the Frame’s reviews, which we rounded up in our Steam Frame review consensus; Engadget scored it 6.5 out of 10.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Buy the Quest 3 if you do not own a gaming PC, want color mixed reality, play Quest exclusives, or need a headset now. It is the better VALUE for most people at $599.99.
  • Consider the Quest 3S at $349.99 if price comes first. It runs the same library with Fresnel lenses, a lower resolution and a narrower view.
  • Reserve the Steam Frame if you have a strong gaming PC, a large Steam library and play mostly PC VR. Its lighter, balanced fit, eye tracking and DEDICATED wireless link are the BEST wireless PC VR package on sale.
  • Wait if you can. Meta’s VR Glasses, announced at Connect on September 23 with compute moved to a tethered puck, are due in spring 2027 at $1,299.99, according to Pogwire.

The Metaverse Watcher Take

These are not really RIVALS. The Quest 3 is a complete, self-contained computer with PC VR as an extra. The Steam Frame is a PREMIUM accessory for a gaming PC that happens to run games on its own. For someone without a PC, the Frame’s price buys less. For a SteamVR player, it is the most COMFORTABLE wireless option shipping today, as long as you accept the QUEUE, the SHORT battery and the add-ons.
