Steam Frame Reviews Agree on Wireless PC VR, and Split Hard on Its $1,059 Price

Three weeks after Valve began selling the Steam Frame through a reservation queue on September 18, the major reviews are IN, and they agree on ONE thing: the headset is EXCELLENT at streaming PC VR wirelessly and a HARD sell for almost everyone else. A roundup published October 8 by iGameMag collects the verdicts from Engadget, Road to VR, Ars Technica, Tom’s Hardware and Eurogamer.

Where the Reviewers Agree

PC STREAMING is the standout. Road to VR found streaming over the bundled Wi-Fi 6E dongle so reliable it was hard to tell apart from a WIRED connection, and Tom’s Hardware and Eurogamer also named wireless PC VR as the Frame’s MAIN strength. Eye-tracked foveated streaming puts the most detail where the wearer is LOOKING.

COMFORT also scores well. The rear-mounted battery balances the roughly 440g headset, and Road to VR measured it at about 16% LIGHTER than a Quest 3. The bundled native version of Half-Life: Alyx impressed Engadget and Ars Technica.

Where It Falls Short

BATTERY life is the most-cited weakness. Engadget got about TWO hours of video and light gaming and UNDER 90 minutes in Half-Life: Alyx; Road to VR measured 1 to 1.5 hours of mixed use.

PRICE is the second. At $1,059 for 256GB, Road to VR calculated the Frame costs about $460 MORE than a Quest 3 without a clear visual advantage. Ars Technica summed it up as too expensive, too UNSTABLE and too late. Reviewers also flagged a patchwork interface, emulated games that can CRASH, thin speakers, low-resolution greyscale passthrough, and NO top strap in the box.

The Scorecard

  • Engadget: 6.5/10, capable and comfortable but too expensive and too late.
  • Road to VR: unscored, a “power-user’s playground,” NOT for newcomers.
  • Ars Technica: MIXED, strong comfort and streaming, pricey and unstable.
  • Tom’s Hardware: competent, BEST for wireless PC streaming.
  • Eurogamer: positive with caveats, immature as a standalone.

The Metaverse Watcher Take

The consensus defines the Frame’s MARKET narrowly: owners of a strong gaming PC and a large Steam library. For standalone buyers, the Quest 3 remains CHEAPER, longer-lasting and better stocked. Valve is already shipping SteamOS updates and the Steam Frame Verified list has passed 200 games, about 70 of them VR-only, so SOFTWARE complaints may ease. Battery and price will not change with a patch.
