WCCFTech’s September 15 roundup of the first Steam Frame reviews lands on a blunt consensus: comfort and wireless PC streaming are the wins; the $1,059 starting price and battery life are the breaks.
Valve’s standalone SteamOS headset opened reservations September 14 in two kits — 256GB at $1,059 and 1TB at $1,299 — each bundling controllers, a Wi-Fi 6E wireless adapter, and Half-Life: Alyx. WCCFTech notes a detail easy to miss on the product page: a power supply is not in the box. Valve sells a 45W USB-C unit separately for $29; the headset needs at least 45W.
What reviewers agreed on
- Comfort: Rear-mounted 21.6Wh battery counterbalances the optics. Multiple outlets called it the most comfortable headset they have worn.
- Wireless PC streaming: The bundled 6 GHz adapter and foveated streaming drew consistent praise for low-latency, low-fiddle PC VR.
- Standalone software: Soft. Some “runs well” titles failed to launch; high-performance mode spun an audible fan toward the forehead; desktop/multi-window use was described as unstable.
- Battery: Practical ceiling around two hours. Standalone VR at high refresh was measured under an hour in bundled Alyx; streaming roughly doubled that in some tests; flat 2D on a virtual screen landed near an hour and 40 minutes. Reviewers repeatedly recommended a USB power bank for long sessions.
- Price and options: At $1,059 before a PSU, first-time buyers were steered toward Quest 3. Monochrome passthrough that costs $149 more via the Arcturus Vision camera was called an odd omission at this tier.
Despite those caveats, WCCFTech reports several reviewers still ranked Steam Frame the best gaming VR headset available — with the caveats attached to a recommendation, not a rejection. The missing “Alyx moment” for a new killer title was also flagged: Frame ships with a native Alyx build, but no Half-Life 3 or equivalent day-one tentpole.
For buyers already deep in Steam PC VR, the review pile is coherent. For everyone else, the same pile puts Quest-class pricing and session length back on the table before the reservation queue clears.
