SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta Patches the Steam Frame Wireless Adapter and Brings Back Android Binder, but Only Six Lines Are New

Valve PUSHED SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta to the Beta and Preview channels on October 16, 2026 (the Steam announcement is stamped 19:02 UTC, about 3:02 p.m. ET). The HEADLINE line for XR readers is SHORT: “Improved support for Steam Frame wireless adapter.” The more CURIOUS line sits under Developer: “Reintroduce support for Android binder IPC.” Everything else that has been CIRCULATING about this build, including the Linux 7.2 KERNEL, is NOT new in 3.9.3.

What Is Actually New

Valve’s official 3.9.3 notes list all changes since the current STABLE SteamOS 3.8, then FLAG what was ADDED in this build. That NEW block is just SIX lines:

  • Fixed performance issues in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer on resume from suspend on Steam Machine.
  • Fixed an issue that could lead to GPU errors in The Crew Motorfest.
  • Fixed audio issues on hotplug of certain monitors in a multi-monitor setup.
  • IMPROVED support for the Steam Frame wireless adapter.
  • Security and stability updates.
  • Developer: REINTRODUCED support for Android binder IPC.

GamingOnLinux, which reproduced the full notes on October 17, reads the ADAPTER line as meaning the Steam Frame “should connect BETTER with the Steam Machine.” Valve itself does NOT spell out the SYMPTOM it fixed, which DEVICES were affected, or whether the change applies ONLY when a Steam Machine is the HOST.

The Adapter Gets Fixed From Both Ends

The timing MATTERS. ONE DAY earlier, Valve’s HEADSET-side SteamOS 0.5.6 Beta for Steam Frame also TARGETED the Wireless Adapter, helping it CONNECT in more situations, alongside EASIER APK sideloading into the Steam library. SteamOS 3.9.3 is the HOST-side branch that runs on Steam Machine, Steam Deck and other PCs. TWO betas touching the SAME dongle in TWO days SUGGESTS Valve is working the CONNECTION problem from the headset and the host at once, though Valve has NOT described it that way.

The adapter has been a RECURRING theme. Earlier this month we covered its rollout to only SOME countries, and in September the 3.9.2 beta stopped the FRAME LIMITER clamping VR streams from Steam Machine to Steam Frame. That fix is STILL listed in 3.9.3 as a carried-over change.

Android Binder Returns, Without an Explanation

Binder is the INTERPROCESS COMMUNICATION mechanism Android is BUILT on; Android apps and system services use it to talk to each other, and Linux tools that run Android software on a desktop generally NEED the kernel DRIVER available. Valve’s wording, “Reintroduce,” MEANS support existed in some earlier SteamOS build and was later DROPPED. The notes do not say WHEN it was removed, WHY it is back, or what Valve PLANS to use it for.

It is TEMPTING to connect this to the Steam Frame, which RUNS Android APKs on its OWN OS branch. That link is SPECULATION. The 3.9.3 line sits on the host-side branch, carries NO Frame label, and is filed under DEVELOPER, not General. Treat it as a CAPABILITY for developers and tinkerers UNTIL Valve says otherwise.

What Is Not New: Linux 7.2, Plasma 6.7.3, Hibernation

SEVERAL social posts present the KERNEL REBASE as part of this drop. Valve’s notes file it under “Previous SteamOS 3.9 Additions,” and we REPORTED the same Linux 7.2 rebase with 3.9.2 in SEPTEMBER. The carried-over list also includes the move from Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3 in Desktop Mode, PRELIMINARY hibernation support that is still not exposed in the Game Mode interface, a switch to wpa_supplicant as the DEFAULT Wi-Fi backend for NEW installations only, and improved support for running SteamOS as a VIRTUAL MACHINE guest with accelerated graphics.

Existing installs KEEP the iwd Wi-Fi backend unless owners switch it in Developer Settings; Valve lists that as a KNOWN ISSUE rather than a FIX.

The Bottom Line

SteamOS 3.9.3 is a SMALL, targeted beta. For Steam Frame OWNERS, the ONE line that COUNTS is the wireless adapter fix, and it only REACHES people who OPT IN via Settings → System → System Update Channel. Valve STILL has given NO date for the 3.9 branch to reach STABLE. The Binder return is worth WATCHING, but NOTHING in Valve’s notes yet TIES it to the HEADSET.
