Valve Removes VK_KHR_maintenance9 Requirement That Broke Steam Link VR

Mixed-News (Chris Steven, October 3–4, 2026) reports that Valve has REMOVED the Vulkan extension REQUIREMENT that stopped Steam Link VR from starting on Nvidia’s 580 driver branch on Linux. The reply that closed SteamVR-for-Linux issue #941 — posted at 14:38 UTC on October 3 — states: “We have removed the requirement for VK_KHR_maintenance9 and this will be available in the next SteamVR beta UPDATE.”

Nothing has SHIPPED yet. The newest SteamVR beta remains 2.18.2 from October 1, and Valve’s reply names neither a version number nor a DATE for the build that will carry the CHANGE. Metaverse Watcher covered Valve’s September 30 confirmation that Nvidia 580 breaks Steam Link VR; today’s note is the FIX path, not a live RELEASE.

What Broke — and Who Diagnosed It

The FAILURE pattern is consistent across reports: Steam Link’s Vulkan device creation returns VK_ERROR_EXTENSION_NOT_PRESENT, the compositor never initialises, and the host shows SteamVR Graphics Error 405. An OWNER — not Valve — traced the gap on September 19: with VK_LOADER_DEBUG enabled, the loader names VK_KHR_maintenance9 as missing. Nvidia 580.159.03 exposes maintenance1 through maintenance8, but not maintenance9. Drivers from 595.91.07 onward expose the EXTENSION.

Affected configs in the TRACKER run from a GTX 1660 Super and RTX 2060 up through an RTX 5090 on 580.x builds, streaming to Quest 3S, Quest 2, and Steam Frame over Wi-Fi or the wireless ADAPTER. Rolling SteamVR back is not a reliable WORKAROUND — owners list 2.16.7, 2.17.9, and other branches still FAILING on 580.

Pascal Owners Gain a Path — Not a Guarantee

Pascal owners (GTX 10-series) could not take the driver UPGRADE route: Nvidia’s open kernel modules do not cover Pascal, and newer branches leave those cards BEHIND. Dropping the extension REQUIREMENT is the WORKAROUND they asked for on September 28. Valve’s close reply does not PROMISE that a 10-series card will then stream well — only that this specific STARTUP failure should CLEAR once the next beta lands.

Until that beta EXISTS, the practical options for 580 users remain the same as on September 30: move to a DRIVER that exposes VK_KHR_maintenance9 if the GPU allows it, or WAIT. The green-and-black Linux streaming fault fixed under SteamVR 2.18.2 is a SEPARATE ticket and is untouched by this CHANGE.
