Canon just proved that a LIVE basketball court can be rebuilt as 3D spatial data hundreds of kilometers away — and watched through mixed reality in REAL TIME. In a September 25, 2026 release, the company said a September 18 demo tied to the 2026 Asian Games combined its volumetric video pipeline, MREAL MR system, and the NTT-led IOWN All-Photonics Network (APN) so remote viewers could pick ANY angle on the action.

Canon calls it the WORLD’S FIRST initiative — as of its September 24 research cutoff — to recreate a competition venue as LIVE 3D spatial data at a remote site and deliver free-viewpoint watching through MR devices. That is a spatial-computing claim, not a conventional broadcast upgrade: the point is PRESENCE at a distance, not a flatter 2D stream.
Three Sites, One Live Court
Per Canon’s global newsroom and a matching NTT East / NTT West release, roughly 100 cameras captured Asian Games basketball at Aichi International Arena. Multi-camera video rode IOWN APN to Canon’s Kawasaki office, where the volumetric servers built the 3D scene. That reconstructed space then traveled again over APN to a satellite viewing site in Tokyo’s Toranomon Hills (ARCH), where about 60 participants held MR devices and watched the game as a tabletop court they could ORBIT.

The architectural WIN matters as much as the headset demo. Canon and NTT say this is the first field success at splitting capture from 3D GENERATION: the heavy reconstruction stack no longer has to sit in a specialized truck at the arena. That opens venues where a generation vehicle cannot easily stage — and trims on-site infrastructure.

What Viewers Actually Saw
At the Tokyo site, MREAL presented a stereoscopic reconstruction on a tabletop surface treated as the COURT. Participants could change viewpoint FREELY during live play — circling players, freezing perspective, and reading spacing that a fixed broadcast camera would miss. Sports-business and facility-operator guests told Canon the format could change how fans experience events they cannot attend in person.

IOWN APN is the PIPE that makes that loop feasible. NTT describes All-Photonics Connect as a wavelength-dedicated optical path built for high-capacity, LOW-LATENCY transfer — exactly the class of link volumetric raw feeds and reconstructed meshes demand if “live” is going to mean LIVE.

Why XR Watchers Should Care
Consumer XR headlines this week have centered on glasses and headset launches. Canon’s demo is a different STACK bet: capture density, optical networks, and MR as the last-mile display for sports PRESENCE. Canon is an official partner of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, and both Canon and NTT say they will keep testing other sports and venues while exploring broadcast and distribution partners.
Nothing here ships as a consumer ticket product tomorrow. What SHIPPED is evidence that remote free-viewpoint sports can leave the lab and run across a REAL event, a REAL optical backbone, and a room full of MR headsets — on the same night the ball is in play.
