SteamVR 2.18.2 Exposes Steam Frame Eye Openness Over OSC

Mixed-News (Chris Steven, October 3, 2026) reports a developer-facing Steam Frame detail that sat inside SteamVR beta 2.18.2: Valve is now EXPOSING EYE OPENNESS data to PC apps over OSC while you STREAM from a Steam Frame — BLINKS for avatars, not gaze for foveation.

Valve’s own SteamVR beta note, as quoted by GamingOnLinux and Mixed-News, is precise: “Expose eye openness information when streaming from Steam Frame, via OSC. (This requires Steam OS 0.4.3, or higher). In an upcoming release, eye openness will also be available via the OpenVR SDK.” The FEATURE shipped in SteamVR Beta 2.18.2 on October 1 at 18:22 UTC. It is not a standalone SteamOS headline — it is a PC-SIDE PIPELINE change.

Openness is lids, not where you look

Mixed-News is careful to separate the new signal from the eye-tracking uses owners already hear about. OPENNESS is how open or shut each eye is from moment to moment. It is not gaze direction, and Valve’s note does not tie it to FOVEATED RENDERING. For SOCIAL VR, that still MATTERS: blinks, squints, and a half-closed lid do much of the work that makes an avatar’s FACE read as alive.

The path is also NARROW. Valve’s wording covers streaming from a Steam Frame and says nothing about apps running standalone on the headset. Until OpenVR gains an SDK call, the AUDIENCE is developers who already listen for OSC — the same message format social tools use for trackers and avatar parameters — not a one-click owner toggle.

Both ends must be on beta

On the PC, 2.18.2 sits on the SteamVR beta branch. On the headset, SteamOS 0.4.3 sits on the Steam Frame Beta channel under Settings → System → System Update Channel. Metaverse Watcher already covered the same 0.4.3 drop for its up-to-12% BATTERY claim and the same 2.18.2 build for the Linux green/black Steam Link HOTFIX. Today’s story is the third THREAD in that beta pair: lid data over OSC, with OpenVR SUPPORT still listed as “upcoming” and undated.

Steam Frame went on SALE September 14. Valve has pushed three OS betas in six days. Until the promised OpenVR RELEASE lands, an app that wants your BLINKS has to listen for them over OSC — and both ends of the STREAM have to be on those BETAS.
