SteamOS 0.4 Reaches Every Steam Frame Owner, but Its Error 17 Fix Still Needs a SteamVR Beta on the PC

Valve has pushed SteamOS 0.4 for Steam Frame to the STABLE channel, which means EVERY owner now gets the FIXES that spent the past WEEK in beta. The headline claim is a BATTERY gain of “UP TO 12%,” but Valve qualifies that number itself: results “vary depending on framerate and content.” The more durable value is in the STREAMING fixes, and one of them still depends on a PC-side BETA.

What Changed on Power

According to the changelog reproduced by GamingOnLinux on October 9 and summarized by PC Guide, Valve improved power efficiency during BOTH streaming and local play. Valve gives NO baseline runtime, so the 12% figure is a CEILING, not a promise of extra minutes.

The release also adds a user setting for Presence Sensor sensitivity under VR Settings, Startup / Shutdown. A new HIGH SENSITIVITY option keeps the DISPLAYS on under a wider range of conditions, and Valve names glasses spacers as one case. We covered that switch when it first appeared in the 0.4.4 beta.

Streaming: Error 17 Needs Two Updates

The stable build includes reliability fixes for “Error 17,” the CONNECTION failure owners have reported while streaming from a PC. The fix is not complete on the HEADSET alone. Valve’s note says users must ALSO opt into SteamVR 2.18.2 or later on the PC, and at release that version was available ONLY on the SteamVR BETA branch. In practice, a STABLE headset paired with STABLE SteamVR does NOT yet get the full fix, a dependency we flagged when the 0.4.3 beta arrived.

Other streaming changes include:

  • Improved COLOR clarity, fixing a headset chroma regression first addressed in the 0.4.5 beta.
  • A fix for wireless ADAPTER connectivity problems that affected users in some countries; Valve does NOT name them.
  • Improved AUDIO reliability while streaming.
  • A fix for rare cases where other network interfaces disrupted the wireless DONGLE connection.
  • Spectator view is now smoothed by default, with an opt-out under VR Settings, Developer.
  • A fix for the keyboard not appearing while streaming.

General, Audio, and Accessibility

Valve fixed an issue that kept CONTROLLER bindings from loading in certain games, naming Google Earth VR and Thumper. The dashboard gets better FOCUS handling and gamepad navigation, a fix for flickering panels, and a fix for unnecessary recentering. The embedded browser (CEF) was updated with CRASH fixes and Linux H.264 detection fixes. On audio, downmix and binaural rendering now play at MATCHING volume across formats.

The accessibility additions are small but CONCRETE. Owners can limit EYE TRACKING to a SINGLE eye with “Track Dominant Eye Only,” which requires enabling advanced settings. They can also set a Dominant Eye, which controls which eye feeds spectator view and SCREENSHOTS.

What It Does Not Say

The changelog gives NO measured battery HOURS, NO list of affected countries for the adapter fix, and NO DATE for SteamVR 2.18.2 to reach the stable branch. Owners can UPDATE under Settings, System. Anyone still seeing Error 17 should check the PC side FIRST.
