Road to VR, one of the LONGEST-running independent XR publications, has CHANGED who holds the editorial keys. Longtime Editor Scott Hayden is now EXECUTIVE EDITOR, and founder Ben Lang is stepping back to a PART-TIME Business Director role while taking a FULL-TIME job as Head of Strategic Partnerships at smart-glasses maker VITURE. Road to VR announced the change on October 9, 2026.
What Changed at the Top
Hayden started at the site as a freelancer in 2014, became a contributor in 2016, and was named Editor in 2019. As Executive Editor he is now RESPONSIBLE for all editorial decisions and strategy. In his welcome letter he wrote that the publication practices “journalism, and we don’t do cheerleading,” and he flagged AI as a near-term DISRUPTION for both news production and how readers consume it.
Lang, who started Road to VR as a hobby blog in 2011, says his Business Director work will focus on the reader experience and the media PLATFORM, building on this year’s Road to VR 5.0 redesign, the new dark mode, and the interactive XR timeline the site published for its 15th anniversary.
The VITURE Question
The MOST notable detail is the industry move. A founder of a major XR outlet taking a partnerships role at a hardware company creates an obvious CONFLICT-of-interest risk, and Road to VR addresses it directly. According to Lang, his acceptance of the offer was CONDITIONAL on VITURE signing an agreement that insulates the company from any effort to use his position to INFLUENCE Road to VR decisions. He also says any future writing he contributes will NEVER cover VITURE or matters where his role would create a conflict.
That is a CLEAR, public commitment, though readers have only the publication’s description of the agreement; its terms were not published. The practical safeguard is structural: final editorial authority now sits with Hayden, not with the person on VITURE’s payroll.
Why It Matters
XR coverage is a SMALL ecosystem, and smart glasses are its HOTTEST category heading into 2027, with Meta, Snap, Xreal and VITURE all competing for attention. A shift in who controls one of its most-cited newsrooms is worth tracking. Watch how Road to VR handles future VITURE hardware coverage; that will be the REAL test of the firewall the site has described.
