visionOS 27 Can Crash Photos on Panoramas Over 300MB, and Apple’s Fix Only Works Before Import

Apple’s shipped release notes for visionOS 27 carry a KNOWN issue that hits one of the release’s HEADLINE features. Toggling between the 2D and Spatial views of a LARGE panorama can CRASH the Photos app on Apple Vision Pro, and Apple ties the fault to file SIZE, not to the act of opening the image.

The entry reads: “Toggling between 2D and Spatial views of a large panorama image (>300Mb) might cause the Photos application to unexpectedly quit.” Apple tracks it as issue 183442382. Its WORKAROUND is a single step: “Convert the asset to JPEG or HEIC before importing it into the photos library,” as MIXED reported on October 9.

Why panoramas matter in this release

Panoramas are NOT a side feature in visionOS 27. Apple’s visionOS 27 update notes PITCH new spatial experiences that “transform panoramas into immersive spatial scenes,” and owners can use those scenes as a personal Environment. Every one of those Environments STARTS as an ordinary panorama that reaches the headset by IMPORT, which is EXACTLY where Apple’s workaround sits.

One panorama bug fixed, one still open

The same notes record a SEPARATE repair: “Spatial Gallery may freeze when loading panoramas,” marked FIXED under issue 177737702. That fault lived in Apple’s own curated gallery. The OPEN one lives in the owner’s personal Photos library, so the two entries should NOT be read as the same defect.

The list also still flags Siri commands for Environments as not working, with gaze and pinch as the fallback, according to MIXED’s earlier report.

What Apple does not say

Apple gives a THRESHOLD, a tracking number, and LITTLE else. It does not say how OFTEN the crash occurs, what source format triggers it, or how large a typical Vision Pro panorama is. The workaround also does NOTHING for files already in the library; conversion has to happen BEFORE import.

The current public build remains visionOS 27.0.1, released September 28 with security fixes only. Until Apple ships a fix, the PRACTICAL rule is simple: convert oversized panoramas to JPEG or HEIC on a Mac or iPhone FIRST, and keep the 2D-to-Spatial toggle for SMALLER files.
