Google’s XR Blocks library reached version 0.22.0 on October 10, and the HEADLINE change is that the three.js WebGPURenderer now runs inside the library’s DESKTOP simulator. The same release notes add a caveat that limits the change: “the spatial UI is NOT yet supported on WebGPURenderer,” and Google calls it “initial simulator support, not end-to-end coverage,” MIXED reports.
In practice, the panels, cards and text fields that make up an XR Blocks interface STAY on the older renderer for now. Developers who WANT WebGPU GET it in the simulator, but NOT yet for the UI layer.
Why a Prototyping Library Matters
XR Blocks is Google’s WebXR and AI PROTOTYPING library, so its releases are a useful READ on what Google expects a headset or glasses browser to handle. According to MIXED, v0.22.0 was tagged at 00:26 UTC on October 10 and reached npm about twenty minutes later. The previous publish, 0.21.1, landed on August 25, which makes this the FIRST release in more than SIX weeks. It is a tagged library release, not a product announcement, and no Google blog post accompanies it.
On-Device AI, With No Numbers Attached
The release adds an ON-DEVICE Gemma 4 assistant with “spatial scene context and markdown replies,” on-device super-resolution, and an EfficientSAM circle-to-search demo. The objects3d pipeline moves from SlimSAM to EfficientSAM-Ti on LiteRT. Google also lists offline spatial captions and translation, Teachable Machines training, photo-to-3D reconstruction and “world-aligned metric depth from a single camera photo.”
None of it ships with a MEASUREMENT. As MIXED notes, Google publishes no frame rate, no latency figure, no accuracy score and NO list of headsets or glasses that can actually RUN the demos. “On-device” is the release notes’ wording, NOT a benchmark.
Plumbing Changes
Gemini calls across the SDK and its examples MIGRATE from generateContent to the Interactions API, and the default Flash model is now gemini-3.8-flash. three.js moves to r186, the build switches from Rollup to Rolldown, linting moves from ESLint to Oxlint with TypeScript 7, and EIGHT Dependabot security alerts are resolved. The spatial UI itself gains scroll views, editable text fields and resizable cards, and Roomcraft, the room-building sample, adds CROSS-DEVICE collaboration.
Two new samples hint at Google’s DIRECTION: one lets a user “summon AI-generated objects onto the surfaces around you,” and another binds ArUco marker tracking to the objects3d pipeline.
What to Watch
The WebGPU path is the KEY item. Until the spatial UI can draw on it, XR Blocks developers face a SPLIT rendering story, and Google has given no DATE for closing that gap.
