UploadVR’s Alicia Haddick spent her FIRST hours with BattleGroupVR2 in Early Access and came away CONVINCED the sequel already IMPROVES on SpaceOwl Games’ 2022–2023 original “on nearly EVERY level.” The piece landed October 14, 2026. The game has been on Steam since November 7, 2025 and on Meta Quest since August 28, 2026. The PRICE is $24.99. Steam’s store page still shows a VERY POSITIVE score from 217 reviews, about 85% positive when checked the SAME day as the impressions.
That COMBINATION matters for a genre VR RARELY serves well. Real-time strategy asks players to COMMAND space, not just stare at it. BattleGroupVR2 puts you on the BRIDGE of a flagship, pointing through a hologram of your ship and the surrounding system, then WATCHING the fleet execute the order in three dimensions. Haddick’s core claim is SIMPLE: the idea was already STRONG in the first game, and the sequel POLISHES it instead of reinventing it. A VISUAL OVERHAUL makes the void feel LARGER the moment the tutorial loads.

What the Bridge Actually Lets You DO
Combat is where the DEPTH shows. You control your own ship and allies, tuck vessels behind debris for COVER, pick aim points, and SHIFT power among weapons, shields, and engines. Traversal can be sped 5x or even 10x through long asteroid runs so downtime does not KILL the session. Map size and DIFFICULTY scale for veterans without, Haddick writes, slamming newcomers into a wall. Congested fights still feel CLUNKY when the pointer snags the wrong ship — a FAIR critique of VR strategy INPUT, not a deal-breaker in her account.
Modes STACK the pitch. Open World wraps tutorial lessons inside a hunt for allies, supplies, and scavenger fights. Skirmish isolates dogfights. Gauntlet stretches that idea into longer runs. Multiplayer and an endless survival track exist for players who want COMPETITIVE leadership and ship builds. The mode Haddick FLAGS as the long-term HOOK is Conquest: a SHARED online galaxy where fleets contest sectors asynchronously, even while a player is offline. That is the FEATURE that will need MONTHS of rivalry and alliance to prove itself, and she treats it as PROMISING rather than finished. Familiar systems get a DOSE of polish; Conquest is the NEW bet.

Review Volume Still Trails the First Game
UploadVR’s August 16 preview put the ORIGINAL BattleGroupVR at a 4.6 Quest score from 114 ratings and a VERY POSITIVE Steam page from 857 reviews after its 2023 PC launch. BattleGroupVR2 entered Steam Early Access on November 7, 2025; by mid-August it had about 198 reviews. The Steam appdetails API on October 14 shows 217 recommendations and an 85% positive / VERY POSITIVE label at $24.99. SpaceOwl’s Early Access box still points to roughly 12–18 MONTHS before a full release, which keeps the sequel INSIDE that window. VOLUME is LOWER than the first game’s Steam page, but the SCORE remains STRONG for an unfinished build.

The One Caveat UploadVR Will Not Soften
Voice acting is the CLEAR miss. Haddick reports ALL character voices currently use AI speech synthesis with a “grating” delivery. SpaceOwl PLANS to replace them with human actors before leaving Early Access. Important lines ALSO appear in text boxes, so the studio could have SHIPPED silent text instead of synthetic speech. Until that swap lands, the BRIDGE soundtrack works AGAINST the otherwise polished command fantasy. READ the boxes; MUTE the voices if you can.
Comfort options include standing or seated play, subtitles, adjustable haptics, and SOME voice commands. Haddick tested on a Quest 3S. The game remains VR ONLY on Steam with OpenXR support listed in the store REQUIREMENTS.
Why This Impressions Piece Matters Now
Quest Early Access is nearly TWO MONTHS old; Steam Early Access is nearly a YEAR old. An October 14 impressions article is NOT a launch scoop. It IS a STATUS CHECK on whether the sequel’s visual OVERHAUL, Conquest mode, and deeper fleet micromanagement JUSTIFY the $24.99 ask while AI audio is still unfinished. Haddick’s answer is YES on gameplay and NO on voices. Players who bounced off thin VR strategy catalogs finally have a SEQUEL that treats the bridge as a COMMAND chair, not a gimmick — PROVIDED they can tolerate synthetic dialogue until SpaceOwl finishes the human PASS. For a platform SHORT on serious RTS options, that TRADEOFF is worth stating PLAINLY.
