UploadVR reports that Virtual Desktop has added a new environment built from BRINK Traveler’s 3D capture of Iceland’s Landmannalaugar — labeled in the app as Iceland Riverbed. The update turns a photogrammetry travel destination into a workspace backdrop for PC streaming, virtual monitors, and media inside the headset.
BRINK Traveler, from the three-person studio BRINK XR, ships real-world locations as explorable 3D spaces with six degrees of freedom — not locked 360 photos. Virtual Desktop, Guy Godin’s long-running PC VR streaming and desktop app, already wraps work and play in selectable environments. Iceland Riverbed is the first BRINK location to cross that line.
Why Iceland Riverbed fits a desktop
Per UploadVR’s interview with BRINK XR co-founder Akin Bilgic, BRINK’s Quest captures already “redline” the headset. Virtual Desktop still needs headroom for PC streaming, multiple virtual displays, and game streaming at the same time. That forced a heavier optimization pass than a straight port.
Bilgic told UploadVR that Landmannalaugar’s relatively flat topography made it a good fit for a stationary workspace. In BRINK Traveler, players get roughly a five-meter radius of detailed exploration. In Virtual Desktop, users are meant to stand near the center of their screens. Detail can fall off farther out without breaking the intended use case — which is why, Bilgic said, the centered view should match BRINK Traveler while walking several meters away reveals blur or distortion that would not pass in the travel app.
A stalled Quest Home idea finds another home
When BRINK Traveler launched on Quest in 2021, it included a bonus Quest home environment. Bilgic said the team wanted to bring more locations into Quest homes, but talks with Meta stalled as priorities shifted. Approaching Godin put one capture into an app that still has a large, durable install base across Quest and PC VR.
Godin told UploadVR that BRINK came after user requests, and that the teams iterated on texture resolution and where to spend detail so today’s headsets could keep Virtual Desktop’s core features alive around the scenery. He also said he is open to more BRINK environments — or similar collaborations from other apps.
What this actually changes
This is not a new BRINK Traveler location and not a Meta Quest system home refresh. It is a rights-cleared, performance-trimmed photogrammetry set dressing for people who already live in Virtual Desktop for work, Discord, Steam, and flatscreen streaming. Bilgic’s framing — “the desktop wallpaper of VR” — is the useful one: scale and depth you cannot get from a flat wallpaper, without asking the streaming stack to give up its CPU and GPU budget.
Iceland Riverbed is available now as a Virtual Desktop environment. BRINK Traveler remains the place to walk the full five-meter capture. More environments may follow if the collaboration holds.
