DRIFTERS: Blackout Crew Opens a Free Quest Playtest Through Sunday

DRIFTERS: Blackout Crew is free to try on Meta Quest this weekend. Salmi Games (Sweet Surrender) opened a Quest playtest that runs through Sunday morning, September 6, 2026, according to UploadVR. Sign-up is through the studio’s Discord; SteamVR playtesting is promised next.

The pitch is a PvE-only sci-fi extraction loop for up to four players. Your mothership is dying. You raid alien temples packed with hostile machines for energy and salvage, then convert the haul into modular weapons, tools, and suit upgrades. Steam’s store page frames it as tactile VR gunplay with jetpack movement, cross-platform co-op, and a 2026 release window — no day attached yet.

Why this weekend matters

Extraction shooters already own a large share of Quest and PC VR attention after Ghosts of Tabor and Contractors Showdown: Exfil Zone. Salmi is aiming at a different lane: stylized sci-fi, pure PvE, and a mothership-repair fantasy instead of another PvPvE lobby. UploadVR first covered the announcement at the June VR Games Showcase; the August showcase added more footage and a Gamescast interview with founder Yacine Salmi.

The studio credits funding support from Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Sweet Surrender’s long post-launch patch cadence is the track record players will judge Blackout Crew against once the playtest closes.

How to get in

Wishlist pages are live on Meta Quest and Steam. Official site: playdrifters.com. Discord invite for playtest signup: discord.gg/salmigames.

No PlayStation VR2 date has been announced. Salmi previously told UploadVR that Sweet Surrender’s PS VR2 port did not sell well, so treat Sony as unconfirmed until the studio says otherwise.

If you care about VR extraction beyond the usual PvP lobbies, this is the weekend to put hours on Quest and send feedback before Salmi locks the next build. The playtest ends Sunday morning — after that, wait for the SteamVR wave and the still-unannounced 2026 ship day.
