Godot’s Apple Vision Pro path just got its MOST practical upgrade yet. Godot 4.8 beta 1, published October 15, 2026, puts the OPEN-SOURCE engine into FEATURE FREEZE with HAND TRACKING and PlayStation VR2 Sense controller support for visionOS ALREADY merged. Both now ride the SAME XR nodes Godot developers ALREADY use on Quest and PC VR. The catch: this is a BETA, Godot has given NO STABLE date, and the visionOS module was merged with support for ONLY the engine’s Mobile renderer.

What the beta actually contains
Because 4.8 is now frozen, the beta post adds NO new features over dev 7. It is a ROUND-UP. Godot COUNTS 1,523 fixes from 340 contributors since 4.7-stable, and 196 fixes from 87 contributors since the PREVIOUS snapshot. The .NET build now REQUIRES .NET 10. For XR, the post names THREE items:
- visionOS as a MODULE (GH-109975), from Ricardo Sanchez-Saez with co-authors Stuart Carnie and huisedenanhai. Godot says it SIMPLIFIES its build-server logic and lays GROUNDWORK for tvOS.
- Hand tracking and PS VR2 controllers on Apple Vision Pro (GH-122567).
- A multi-layer projection camera (GH-116424), from XR maintainer Bastiaan Olij.
Godot ALSO repeats a promise it has not yet kept: more information on the visionOS work is “coming soon,” and it will take “a little while longer still.”
One line to port, by the author’s account
The hand-tracking PR, by contributor oPinon, was opened August 18 and merged August 20. It ADDS 1,269 lines across 17 FILES. Input arrives through the SAME XRController3D, XRNode3D and XRHandModifier3D nodes used on other platforms. The author writes that porting a Godot game to Vision Pro USUALLY needs only one change: initialize the interface with XRServer.find_interface("visionOS"). Their test table runs the SAME Godot OpenXR demos on Vision Pro and on a Quest 3 over Virtual Desktop.
Under the hood, hand data comes from Apple’s ARKit and controller data from GCController. Both are OFF until ENABLED in Project Settings. Export ADDS the NSHandsTrackingUsageDescription and NSAccessoryTrackingUsageDescription keys, and visionOS users can REVOKE hand and accessory tracking per app. The PR also lets the interface run WITHOUT Compositor Services, so it works with Apple’s GodotRealityKit plugin, which opens its OWN immersive space.

Apple’s promise, now in the engine
When Apple shipped visionOS 27, it listed Godot ENGINE support for Compositor Services rendering, a RealityKit plugin, a PHASE audio plugin and Sense controller support. We noted on September 19 that Godot’s Sense support was NEXT. Beta 1 is where that line turns into MERGED code inside a release Godot is no longer adding features to.
The ROAD was LONG. Native visionOS platform support (GH-105628) merged in May 2025 for Godot 4.5. The XR module itself was opened in August 2025 and did not merge until August 5, 2026, ALMOST a YEAR later.
The official announcement drew MORE than 500 likes within TWO days:
The 4.8 release cycle reaches an ever-important milestone with its very first beta snapshot: #GodotEngine 4.8 beta 1 arrives! 🎉

We’ve prepared a feature-packed blog post showcasing the main highlights for this new version:
The limits worth reading twice
FIRST, the renderer. The module PR states it supports ONLY the Mobile renderer “for now,” not Forward+. The beta notes say NOTHING to suggest that has changed. Projects BUILT around Forward+ features should plan on TESTING, not assuming.
SECOND, setup. Immersive apps must set the new application/app_role export option to Immersive, with passthrough chosen through application/immersion_style. Those are NEW knobs for TEAMS coming from OpenXR.
THIRD, the camera rework is FOUNDATION, not a feature you will notice yet. Olij’s PR says multi-layer projection could let apps draw HANDS over other composition layers and is “likely required” for FOVEATED inset support. Those are FUTURE uses, not SHIPPED ones.
The Metaverse Watcher read
Vision Pro’s CONTENT problem is PARTLY an ENGINE problem. Unity has covered visionOS since launch, but Godot is FREE, open source, and its XR stack ALREADY targets Quest and PC VR through OpenXR. A one-line interface swap, if it holds across REAL projects, LOWERS the cost of trying Apple’s headset for studios that ALREADY ship on Quest. The HONEST caveats: this is a beta, the Mobile-renderer limit is REAL, and Godot’s own promised visionOS write-up is STILL pending. WATCH the release candidates for renderer changes and for that post. EITHER will show whether Godot on Vision Pro is a PORTING path or a PROMISE.
