FOUR years after Take-Two’s lawyers pushed him OFF Grand Theft Auto V, Luke Ross is BACK on it. On October 15 the veteran modder POSTED Release 2610.15.2 of his R.E.A.L. VR framework to Patreon early access, adding SUPPORT for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced. He titled the post “It’s not a comeback… it’s a return.” A DAY later he shipped a hotfix, 2610.16.2, because the launch build BROKE shooting from vehicles. The return is REAL. It is also EARLY access, keyboard-or-gamepad ONLY, and it asks players to switch OFF the game’s ANTI-CHEAT.

Where this started, and how it ended the first time
Ross’s ORIGINAL R.E.A.L. mod for GTA V is STILL on GitHub. Its LAST release, Release 7, went up in DECEMBER 2020. A note dated July 8, 2022 sits at the TOP of the README: because of what Ross calls “hostile behavior” from Take-Two Interactive, he would “no longer provide any kind of support or updates for this mod,” which he says had “almost 200,000 downloads.” That number is his, and it is LARGE for a PC VR mod.
The TRIGGER was a DMCA notice. As Road to VR reported on July 12, 2022, Take-Two sent the complaint to Patreon, which PASSED it to Ross, covering his VR mods for GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Mafia Definitive Edition. Ross pulled ALL three while DISPUTING the claim. At the time Road to VR put his Patreon income at roughly $25,000 a MONTH. The Verge and PC Gamer covered the SAME takedown.
What the new build actually does
This is NOT the 2020 mod revived. It TARGETS the Enhanced edition, which Steam lists as released on March 4, 2025, and it runs inside the SAME game-agnostic RUNTIME Ross uses for his OTHER titles. In his post, Ross CLAIMS the build supports “full ray tracing,” DLSS for stereoscopic supersampling, and his “AER v2” motion smoothing. He says AER v2 FIXES the judder his OLD version showed when driving fast cars or flying helicopters. His BOLDEST line: “everything works here. You can actually play the full game with this.”
Those are the developer’s OWN claims. We have NOT tested the build. The October 16 update to the same post is a USEFUL reality check: a LAST-minute change to cutscene detection “broke shooting from vehicles,” and Ross told everyone playing GTA V Enhanced to update IMMEDIATELY.
Installation notes published by the Russian games site DTF add a DETAIL that MATTERS. For GTA V Enhanced, players add TWO Steam launch options, -ignorepipelinecache and -nobattleye. DTF says the first FIXES the rain effect and the second DISABLES the BattlEye anti-cheat and online play so the VR runtime can start. In PLAIN terms, this is a SINGLE-player experience. GTA Online is OFF the table while it runs.
ACCESS is the other limit. GTA V Enhanced sits in the EARLY-access build that PAYING Patreon supporters get. DTF says Ross’s free public build updates roughly every TWO to THREE months and was last refreshed at the end of July, so NON-PAYING users are WAITING for now.
Still no motion controllers, on purpose
Ross’s framework keeps TRADITIONAL controls: keyboard and mouse or a gamepad, with the headset handling ONLY the view. He ADDRESSES the question HEAD-ON. He concedes that AI tools have made adding motion controls to an arbitrary game FASTER than the weeks or months it used to take. But he argues that NONE of the AI-assisted, “vibe-coded” VR conversions now flooding the scene implement them PROPERLY, and he takes AIM at the term “physical steering” for grabbing a virtual wheel with no force feedback. His conclusion: NO motion controllers here.
That is a DELIBERATE trade. Players KEEP the original animations and staging, and they can play SEATED. They do NOT get hands in the world.
The legal bet
Ross is CLEAR that he weighed the RISK of another takedown. His ARGUMENT is that R.E.A.L. VR is now a RUNTIME, “a conversion layer sitting between the game itself and the VR headset,” rather than a GAME-SPECIFIC mod. He says he no longer uses PROMOTIONAL material from the games or even the OFFICIAL game names in release announcements. He adds that IP experts and lawyers he consulted believe a DMCA claim against a multi-game runtime would “most likely” be a BAD-FAITH claim. He ALSO admits there are “no guarantees.”
Take-Two has NOT commented publicly on the new release, and we found NO new notice against it. The company’s 2022 complaint went THROUGH Patreon, and that is the SAME place this build is hosted.

A framework that keeps growing, with a counting gap
DTF’s list as of October 15 puts 37 games in the MAIN build, including Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and FIVE Far Cry titles. It puts EIGHT in early access, among them Baldur’s Gate 3, Crimson Desert, Death Stranding 2 and now GTA V Enhanced. That is 45 in TOTAL. Ross himself describes a runtime that interfaces with “more than 60” games. NEITHER source explains the gap; older or retired profiles MAY account for it, but that is our guess, not a FACT.
The SAME release also FIXES a startup CRASH in 007 First Light after its latest official updates. It ADDS an option for the Spider-Man games so camera pitch control applies ONLY in cutscenes and quick-time events, keeping the horizon LEVEL during normal play and swinging.
EARLY player reaction is THIN but POSITIVE. One player reported a few hours on a Quest 3 over Link with an RTX 4080 Super:
Luke Ross GTAV VR mod update is the real deal. Just played for a few hours on my Meta Quest 3 through link connection to my pc. Highly recommend anyone with VR waiting for GTA6 to try it out. I’m playing at max settings on a 4080 super with no noticeable performance issues

The Metaverse Watcher read
The PC VR library STILL LEANS on flat games converted by outsiders, and GTA V was the TITLE that made Ross’s name. Bringing it back on the Enhanced edition, with ray tracing and a REAL claim of full-game playability, is a MEANINGFUL test of whether POLISH beats the FLOOD of quick AI-built conversions Ross openly criticizes. The CAVEATS are just as CONCRETE: a PAID early-access gate, NO motion controls, anti-cheat switched OFF, and the OPEN question of how Take-Two RESPONDS. WATCH for the FREE-build update and for any word from the publisher. EITHER one will tell you MORE than the launch post did.
