Gurman: Meta’s Puck Tradeoff Is What Vision Pro Needed — FOV Still Favors Apple

After nearly an hour with pre-release HARDWARE, Gurman argued Meta’s clip-on PUCK felt less cumbersome than Apple’s external BATTERY, and that the glasses looked surprisingly REFINED for early units.

Meta’s September 23 newsroom post sets the commercial FACTS: the glasses weigh about 100 GRAMS on the face, go on sale in SPRING 2027 for $1,299.99, and use a two-part DESIGN with an optical tether. The puck carries the Snapdragon Reality Elite PROCESSOR, battery, and storage; Meta rates up to three hours of high-resolution media PLAYBACK with 45W fast charging.

Weight Wins, Immersion Still Contested

Gurman’s POINT is a priority fight, not a clean SPEC sweep. Mac Observer notes Vision Pro still offers a wider field of VIEW, stronger light BLOCKING, automatic eye-spacing ADJUSTMENT, and more polished SOFTWARE. Meta’s open frame admits light from above even with optional seals, a TRADEOFF the company accepts to keep face weight near a deck of cards.

How-To Geek framed the same split on September 24: Meta wins on extended-wear COMFORT and PRICE; Apple keeps laptop-class M5 silicon, wider FOV near 100°, and higher-resolution panels. RedShark News puts Vision Pro near 750–800g on the head versus Meta’s 100g glasses-only figure, with Apple’s current Vision Pro starting around $3,699.

What Ships, What Remains Unproven

Neither Gurman nor Meta claims the debate is SETTLED. Final FIRMWARE, seal kits, and all-day COMFORT cannot be judged until spring. Apple is still exploring successor form factors, including contested puck CONCEPTS, while Meta has already committed the lighter SPLIT to a public PRICE and SEASON. For buyers who already rejected Vision Pro’s mass, Gurman’s September READ is the clearest SIGNAL yet that Meta’s TRADEOFF is the one Apple’s critics wanted — even if Apple still leads on immersion DEPTH today.
