Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo ships with a 48MP Dual Fusion rear camera system — Main and Ultra Wide — but Apple’s own technical specifications omit both spatial photos and spatial video. That leaves the foldable without the native Vision Pro capture path that iPhone 18 Pro still advertises at 1080p 30fps.
Per UploadVR, the gap shows up on Apple’s published camera feature list for Duo, not as a rumor. We checked Apple’s iPhone Duo specs the same way: the Camera and Video Recording sections detail Dual Capture, Cinematic mode, Action mode, and 4K Dolby Vision up to 120fps on the Fusion Main — and never name spatial photo or spatial video capture.
What spatial capture actually is
Apple introduced spatial video on iPhone 15 Pro in 2023, ahead of Vision Pro. The phone records from the Main and Ultra Wide cameras at once and packs the two views into an MV-HEVC spatial file. Native spatial photo capture followed with the iPhone 16 lineup. On Pro models that still list the feature, Apple quotes 1080p at 30fps for spatial video — the same cap that has stuck since the first generation.
Duo has the hardware ingredients on paper: the same A20 Pro chip as iPhone 18 Pro, including a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and Apple says its 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide matches the Pro models. UploadVR notes Apple has not explained the omission, and the outlet has not hands-on tested Duo yet. Until a software update or a clarification lands, the published specs are the signal.
Workarounds, not replacements
Vision Pro can still turn ordinary 2D photos into spatial photos with on-device machine learning after capture. Duo owners can use that path for stills. What Apple does not currently offer on Vision Pro is the same built-in conversion for ordinary 2D video.
Meta’s Quest side has moved further into software synthesis: Quest 3 can stereoscopify web images, and Instagram on Quest can push both photos and phone video into AI view synthesis. That is a different pipeline from true dual-camera spatial capture — depth is estimated, not measured from a second lens — but UploadVR’s earlier Instagram tests found the result often close enough that artifacts show up only occasionally.
Why it matters for spatial computing
Spatial capture is one of the few everyday bridges between a phone and Vision Pro. Apple kept it on iPhone 18 Pro while pricing Duo at the top of the lineup. If the omission holds through launch software, the most expensive new iPhone will be a weaker spatial-content camera than the slab Pro — even with matching silicon and a matching Ultra Wide module.
