Kopin Lands a Second Pentagon Award for Color MicroLED: $18.6 Million for Soldier and Pilot Displays, $34 Million in Total

Kopin has landed a SECOND Pentagon check for COLOR MicroLED. The Westborough, Massachusetts display MAKER announced on October 8 that it secured an $18.6 MILLION SOLE-SOURCE award from the Office of the Secretary of War, routed through the U.S. Army Contracting Command under the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) program. Kopin says that brings its TOTAL IBAS funding to $34 MILLION, and that the new money pays for TWO more MicroLED display configurations: one for ground-soldier equipment and one for pilot head-up displays.

The award drew FRESH attention this WEEK after Auganix picked it up on October 15. The NUMBERS are SMALL next to consumer XR budgets. The SIGNAL is not: the U.S. government is PAYING to build the bright, rugged MICRODISPLAYS that see-through AR glasses need, and to build them ONSHORE, at HOME.

What the $18.6 million buys

According to Kopin’s release, the funding covers THREE things:

  • Two NEW display configurations. One is “purpose-built for specific ground soldier equipment and missions,” the other for PILOT HUDs.
  • U.S. manufacturing. Kopin says the award lets it ACCELERATE onshoring its MicroLED manufacturing processes so the components are “designed and built” in the United States.
  • A wider roadmap. The company lists future weapon sights, HELMET-mounted systems, and augmented-reality platforms as places the displays could go.

The requirements Kopin names are the HARD ones for ANY head-worn display: “exceptional BRIGHTNESS, rugged durability, power efficiency,” and reliable performance in ALL operating environments. DAYLIGHT readability is exactly where today’s consumer AR glasses STRUGGLE, which is why MicroLED keeps showing up on EVERY serious optics roadmap.

CEO Michael Murray called the award “significant continued VALIDATION of Kopin’s MicroLED technology and its importance to next-generation U.S. defense systems,” adding that it is “separately enabling the foundational MicroLED platform technology for our AI Interconnect products.” That last clause MATTERS: Kopin is positioning the SAME MicroLED base for optical INTERCONNECTS in data centers, not ONLY for eyewear.

How this builds on the first award

The FIRST IBAS award came on September 15, 2025: a $15.4 million Other Transaction Agreement to develop ULTRA-bright, full-color MicroLED displays for GROUND-SOLDIER AR, readable by DAY and NIGHT. Kopin said at the time that it BUILT on its Soldier Display Trade Study and a Phase 2 SBIR contract for an Off-the-Visor extended reality PROTOTYPE. Defense Daily reported then that the Army was eyeing color MicroLED as a KEY capability for its Soldier Borne Mission Command (SBMC) program, with displays targeted for 2027.

So the ARITHMETIC is SIMPLE: $15.4 million plus $18.6 million equals the $34 million Kopin now cites. The SECOND round moves from ONE soldier-AR focus to multiple form factors, and adds PILOTS to the TARGET list.

Why it matters for XR

Military head-worn displays are ONE of the few XR markets where buyers will PAY for performance FIRST and SCALE later. That makes defense money a COMMON bridge for display technology that is not yet CHEAP enough for consumers. The Army’s soldier-AR effort is also getting CROWDED: we reported on October 13 that Rivet says it has delivered 70 Hard Spec prototypes to the Army. Kopin is betting on a DIFFERENT layer of that stack, the display ENGINE itself.

What Kopin has NOT said is EQUALLY important. The release gives NO resolution, brightness figure, panel size, delivery schedule, or NAMED weapon or helmet program for the two new displays, and it describes development and manufacturing work, NOT a production order. Like every award announcement, it carries forward-looking caveats about program SCHEDULES and manufacturing performance. Until Kopin SHIPS color MicroLED in a FIELDED system, this is FUNDING, not proof.
