Meta sells exactly three standalone headsets in 2026: Quest 3S with 128GB, Quest 3S with 256GB and Quest 3 with 512GB. They run the same chip, the same 8GB of memory, the same controllers and the same game library. The real differences come down to lenses, display sharpness, field of view, storage and price. With Black Friday on November 27 and Quest 2 and Quest Pro now heading out of support, this is the comparison most first-time buyers and upgraders need. Here is what the spec sheet actually means and which headset fits which buyer.

The Short Answer
- Buy Quest 3S (128GB, $349.99) if you are new to VR, buying for a teenager, or mostly play a handful of games and stream video. It plays every Quest game Quest 3 plays.
- Buy Quest 3 (512GB, $599.99) if you care about image clarity, plan to play PC VR, use the headset for mixed reality or productivity, or wear it for long sessions where edge-to-edge sharpness matters.
- Skip the Quest 3S 256GB ($449.99) unless you know you need the storage. It costs $100 more than the 128GB model for storage alone, and it sits only $150 below Quest 3, which adds far better optics plus 512GB.
Current U.S. Prices (Checked November 3, 2026)
Meta raised Quest prices on April 19, 2026, citing the surge in memory-chip costs. In its pricing update, Meta said Quest 3 rose $100 and both Quest 3S models rose $50, while accessories kept their prices. The Meta Store compare page still lists the post-increase prices today.
| Model | Price before Apr 19, 2026 | Meta Store price (Nov 3, 2026) | Refurbished (reported) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quest 3S 128GB | $299.99 | $349.99 | $319.99 |
| Quest 3S 256GB | $399.99 | $449.99 | $409.99 |
| Quest 3 512GB | $499.99 | $599.99 | $549.99 |
Retailer pricing can differ from Meta’s, especially in the run-up to Black Friday. We list only prices we verified on the retailer page, so treat any deal you see elsewhere as something to confirm at checkout.

Display and Lenses: The Difference You Will Notice First
This is the single biggest reason to pay more. Quest 3 uses pancake lenses with continuous lens-spacing adjustment, while Quest 3S uses the older Fresnel design with three preset positions. Meta rates Quest 3 at 25 pixels per degree against 20 for Quest 3S, and Quest 3 pushes roughly 30% more pixels per eye.
In practice, pancake optics keep text and detail clear across more of the lens, while Fresnel lenses have a smaller sharp center and are more prone to glare rings in high-contrast scenes. If you read text in VR, use virtual monitors, watch a lot of video, or play PC VR titles with fine detail, Quest 3 is the clearly better screen. The continuous IAD also helps anyone whose eye spacing falls between Quest 3S’s three presets.
Field of View
Quest 3 offers 110° horizontal and 96° vertical, versus 96° by 90° on Quest 3S. That 14-degree horizontal gap is noticeable: the image feels less like looking through goggles, and peripheral awareness in fast games and mixed reality improves. It is not a dealbreaker for casual play, but it adds to the premium feel of Quest 3.
Performance and Games: Identical
Both headsets run the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 with 8GB of memory, and Meta lists the same content library for both. Every title in our Best Quest 3 Games (2026) and Best Free Quest Games lists runs on Quest 3S too. Developers target the same chip, so you are not buying into a weaker library with the cheaper model. A Horizon+ subscription works the same way on both.
Where Quest 3 pulls ahead is PC VR. Streaming over Link, Air Link, Steam Link or Virtual Desktop works on both, but the sharper pancake lenses let you see more of what a gaming PC renders. Our guide on how to play PC VR games on Quest 3 covers all four methods.
Mixed Reality and Passthrough
Meta lists the same full-color passthrough for both models: 4MP cameras at 18 pixels per degree. Mixed reality apps run on either headset. Quest 3’s wider field of view and sharper lenses still make blended apps feel more natural, so buyers who expect to spend real time in mixed reality should lean toward Quest 3.
Battery Life, Storage and Comfort
Quest 3S is rated for 2.5 hours of general use against 2.2 hours for Quest 3, despite a smaller 4324 mAh battery, because it drives fewer pixels. Real runtime depends heavily on brightness, refresh rate and wireless use; our Quest 3 battery life guide covers how to stretch either headset.
Storage is where the 128GB Quest 3S can pinch. Large modern Quest games can take several gigabytes each, and screenshots and recorded video add up, so a big library can fill 128GB faster than buyers expect. Light users and kids rarely hit that limit, and you can delete and redownload purchases at any time. Heavy collectors should look at 256GB or Quest 3’s 512GB.
Both ship with a soft strap, with hard straps sold separately, and Meta says Quest 3 is 30% slimmer than Quest 2 while Quest 3S is 20% slimmer. Quest 3S includes a glasses spacer in the box, a small but useful extra for glasses wearers.
Value Math: Where Each Dollar Goes
- Quest 3S 128GB to 256GB: +$100 for 128GB more storage and nothing else.
- Quest 3S 256GB to Quest 3: +$150 for pancake lenses, 30% more pixels, a wider field of view, continuous IAD and double the storage again.
- Quest 3S 128GB to Quest 3: +$250 for the complete premium package.
Seen this way, the middle model is the weakest value in the lineup. The best two choices are the cheapest Quest 3S for budget buyers and Quest 3 for anyone who will use the headset often.
Who Should Buy Which
| Buyer | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First headset, trying VR | Quest 3S 128GB | Lowest price, full game library |
| Kids and teens | Quest 3S 128GB | Same games, lower risk; pair with parental controls |
| Fitness | Quest 3S 128GB | Optics matter less in fast workouts |
| PC VR player | Quest 3 | Sharper lenses show more of what your PC renders |
| Productivity and media | Quest 3 | Clear text across the lens, wider field of view |
| Quest 2 owner upgrading | Quest 3 | The biggest visible jump in clarity |
| Large game library | Quest 3 | 512GB for $150 more than Quest 3S 256GB |
Should You Wait for a New Headset?
Meta has not announced a Quest 4 date, and reporting on its next headsets remains unconfirmed. Our upcoming VR headsets tracker covers what is actually scheduled. If you want to play this holiday season, Quest 3 and Quest 3S are the current lineup and both receive the same software updates. If you are still on Quest 2, the end of support makes upgrading now more sensible than waiting.
