Real VR Fishing’s Room Scan Floods the Floor and Leaves the TV Showing, but the Mode Stays Quest-Only

Real VR Fishing’s October 13 update did more than drop Halloween maps. On Quest 3 and Quest 3S, players can now SCAN the room, paint WATER onto the floor, and leave the television SHOWING. The studio that ships the seven-year-old fishing sim says that ROOM-SCAN mode is CURRENTLY Quest-only, even though the SAME title also runs on Galaxy XR and Steam.

What the room scan actually does

According to a October 17 report from VR.org, the mode arrived in the October 13 PATCH. Six days earlier, Devs United Games PREVIEWED it on the Quest listing in one line: open a supported MAP and the OCEAN spreads across your room FLOOR. Two days after launch, a developer posting as u/Dustin_DUG filled in the detail the patch notes skipped: players SCAN the room, PICK which parts become the fishing spot, and everything ELSE stays as the REAL room — so the TV can stay VISIBLE while the game runs.

That REPLACES a clumsier test from last DECEMBER’s Holiday Update (version 2.583). That build stripped distant scenery, kept the water SURFACE, and dropped a LARGE web-browser PANEL where the scenery had been. The developer called that mode “kind of a test.” Players liked it enough that mixed reality became PERMANENT. The October version trades the VIRTUAL panel for whatever SCREEN the player already owns, so the game no longer has to DECODE or DRAW the thing being watched. It only has to STOP drawing over the corner where the TV hangs. The in-game BROWSER is still there; the developer said it plays Prime Video and Disney+, with Netflix unsupported for now.

Why it stays on Quest

On Quest 3 and Quest 3S, the developer points players to SPACE SETUP under Settings and Environment Setup, Meta’s SCENE model of walls, floor, ceiling, a triangle mesh, and labeled furniture volumes. Meta’s public list of semantic labels includes SCREEN next to COUCH, TABLE and LAMP. That label sits behind the most practical request in the Reddit thread — automatic passthrough on the TV only — and the developer’s reply was that the studio would do “some R&D” on it.

Off Quest, the shared vocabulary is THINNER. Khronos’s OpenXR spatial-entities work defines plane labels as uncategorized, floor, wall, ceiling and table. Flooding a floor is PORTABLE on paper. Telling a television from a bookcase is NOT, at least not through that STANDARD. When a commenter asked about Galaxy XR parity, the developer answered: “This feature is currently only available on Meta Quest!” The game is on Steam as well, and Valve tested its Android build for Steam Frame, but nobody at the studio has said what KEEPS room-scan MR off those builds. Room DATA is the obvious SUSPECT; that is an INFERENCE, not a studio STATEMENT.

How to try it, and what is still early

The game costs $19.99 on the Meta Horizon Store and is playable through Horizon+, the developer says. After UPDATING, SCAN the room if you never have, start MR FISHING on a supported map, and choose which scanned SURFACES become WATER. For ICE fishing, select Passport on the World Map; it turns the floor to ICE. That path is labeled an EARLY version, and players cannot cut their OWN hole yet. MULTIPLAYER works in mixed reality, with other anglers appearing “as if they’re right there in your room,” in the developer’s words. The store still lists QUEST 2 and QUEST PRO for the base game; the studio has NOT said whether the ROOM SCAN works on either.

For a team planning MIXED REALITY into 2027, the instructive part is how SMALL the feature is. A player picks which scanned surfaces become WATER and the game stops DRAWING everywhere else. It works because Meta’s SCENE model hands the game a LABELED room. That same DEPENDENCY is the LIKELIEST reason the mode has NOT LEFT the Quest. Until CROSS-VENDOR labels GROW past floors, walls, ceilings and tables, anything that needs to KNOW what an object is gets written one RUNTIME at a time.
