SteamOS 3.8.28 hit the STABLE channel on September 24, and the first line that matters for Steam Frame is deliberately careful. Valve’s release notes list “PRELIMINARY support for the Steam Frame Wireless Adapter,” which puts the DRIVER on every Steam Deck and Steam Machine without a beta opt-in. Mixed-News (Shane S. Ellison, Sep 25) is clear: PRELIMINARY is Valve’s own word — and it BUYS nothing new for VR today.

A Steam Machine still cannot STREAM VR games to a Steam Frame. Valve said as much on September 19; Metaverse Watcher covered that gap earlier. The same 3.8.28 build had been on BETA from September 22 before Valve promoted it. Official notes are in Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.28 Steam News post.
Preliminary Adapter Support — Not a VR Link

What shipped is foundational SOFTWARE: the Wireless Adapter DRIVER on the x86 SteamOS branch that Deck and Steam Machine share. What did NOT ship is playable PCVR-style streaming from those boxes to Frame. Steam Frame takes its own SteamOS updates on a separate branch — Mixed-News notes the first Frame update sped charging and fixed a garbled microphone. PRELIMINARY on Deck and Machine is not the same as a working Frame wireless play path.
Mesa, VRAM, Kernel, and a Real VR Fix

Valve updated Mesa “to a new MAJOR release, containing many ray-tracing performance improvements,” and credits it with “GREATLY improved VRAM management” when VRAM is limited. The Linux kernel moves to 6.18.50. Steam Machine FIRMWARE 108 stops the system occasionally waking right after sleep and fixes a rare case of CPU performance staying degraded until a reboot.
One change is aimed SQUARELY at VR: Valve “worked around an issue where Unreal Engine 5 VR games could display a blank RIGHT eye” — the kind of bug that makes a headset UNUSABLE rather than merely slower. That workaround is independent of Frame Wireless Adapter support; it is still the most CONCRETE VR line in the changelog.
Steam Controller 2026, Gamepads, Housekeeping

Valve added Steam Controller (2026) support to the built-in hid_steam DRIVER so native controller apps work when Steam is not running. The 2015 Steam Controller Wireless Adapter can now WAKE a system. Gamepad support arrives for three non-Valve handhelds: MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, Konkr FIT, and AYANEO Pocket S2.

Housekeeping still has teeth. Valve FIXED a freeze on resume when an SD card was pulled during suspend, degraded game performance after sleep/resume on AMD discrete GPUs, HDMI hotplug lockups in Desktop Mode, and a Steam Machine splash that now appears much more quickly. Audio gets a settings reset, HDMI dropout fixes, and an option to prefer lower-latency Bluetooth codecs. Black screens in launchers including Zenless Zone Zero and FINAL FANTASY XIV Online are FIXED, with better behavior on machines that use an external Wi-Fi adapter — or none at all.
For Deck and Steam Machine owners, 3.8.28 is what arrives on the NEXT restart. For Frame owners waiting on a Steam Machine or Deck STREAM, the adapter DRIVER is present — and the playable LINK remains WITHHELD.
