Valve’s SteamVR beta 2.18.1 now lists OFFICIAL tethered Quest support over USB — but ONLY when paired with the Steam Link Beta on the headset. The notes landed on SEPTEMBER 23; Mixed-News (Michael Zelich, Sep 25) spells out what that ACTUALLY means for PC VR streaming without Wi-Fi.

The CHANGE is a CABLE path for Steam Link on Meta Quest headsets. Valve’s wording is PRECISE: “Added tethered Quest support over USB (must be used with Steam Link Beta).” That is TWO opt-ins — SteamVR beta on the PC, Steam Link beta on the Quest — not a stable-channel switch.
USB Tether, Dual Betas
Anyone can join the SteamVR beta from the app’s properties in Steam. The headset side comes from Steam Link’s beta channel. Valve’s Steam Link for Meta Quest FAQ covers the broader setup. Earlier public testing already pointed this way: UploadVR (Sep 2) described wired USB in Steam Link’s public beta after Horizon OS 2.5 added Android USB networking (NCM), noting Steam Client Beta as a prerequisite and that early runs still NEEDED Wi-Fi for discovery before switching to USB.

Steam Link in 2.18.1 also IMPROVES automatic bitrate selection, FIXES video corruption, checkerboarding, and stuck streams, and lets the headset OVERRIDE the host framerate when that rate is set MANUALLY at the OS level on Meta Quest — again with Steam Link Beta.
Aurora Becomes the Default Room

Outside streaming, Valve changes the room you wait in while a title loads. “Default environment is now the ‘Aurora’ (can be disabled in settings).” Theatre mode gains CONTENT-AWARE tinting that tracks what is on screen. A gamepad can drive the system UI; lesser-used controls move into an “Additional Options” menu; game dimming while the dashboard is open can be switched OFF; and a keyboard that failed to appear in some titles (Valve names Skyrim VR) is FIXED.
Linux Fixes — Still Not Stable
Linux users get THREE hardware-facing fixes: async reprojection failing on AMD GPUs, GPU selection on machines with both discrete and integrated graphics, and compatibility with systems that run WITHOUT systemd. Controller bindings get separate REPAIRS when local edits vanished after a Steam account CHANGE.

What Valve does NOT publish: bandwidth or latency numbers, a cable SPECIFICATION, or any Quest model beyond the generic “Meta Quest headsets” label. Mixed-News is CLEAR that a Quest 2 owner has the SAME public facts as a Quest 3 owner. Stable is still on 2.17 (Valve posted a 2.17.10 hotfix on Sep 18). Meta’s own Quest Link has carried PC VR over USB for YEARS; Valve’s path to a tethered Quest stream runs through TWO betas and asks for bug reports in the SteamVR forum, not under the news post.

2.18.1 is the piece that FINALLY writes USB Quest tethering into the SteamVR beta changelog in PLAIN language — after a busy September for Valve’s streaming stack.
