TDK Buys OQmented Assets. AIsight Wants a Full AR Light Engine.

TDK is buying the display stack it could not fully own in-house. In an August 18 corporate release, the Tokyo electronics group said it acquired assets from Germany’s OQmented (legal name Kiitz Technologies GmbH) — MEMS laser beam scanning, mirror IP, and display-engine know-how — and folded them into TDK AIsight, the AR display unit TDK stood up in 2026. Independent coverage from Auganix landed the same deal on September 3. Financial terms were not disclosed.

What TDK actually bought

This is an asset purchase, not a splashy full-company buyout with a sticker price. TDK’s release is specific about the payload: intellectual property, engineering expertise, and MEMS-based laser beam scanning technology from a German team that built 2D MEMS mirrors and light engines for AR. OQmented’s public pitch also emphasized low power and compact system size — the two constraints that kill most glasses displays before they leave the lab.

TDK’s stated goal is a vertically integrated light engine under AIsight: its own eye-intent sensing, Full-color Laser Module (FCLM), MEMS mirror work, optics, and electronics, now plus OQmented’s scanning and display-engine stack. Te-Won Lee, CEO of TDK AIsight, said the move “enhances our ability to develop innovative display solutions and support the growing demand for high-performance AR devices.” No volume production date, no OEM customer, and no module SKU were announced.

Why AIsight keeps buying pieces

The OQmented deal sits on top of an earlier move. In June 2025, TDK acquired SoftEye, a U.S. systems company building custom chips, cameras, software, and algorithms for smart glasses. AIsight then became the house for that sensing-and-AI layer. Buying OQmented’s display assets in 2026 is the complementary half: perception plus projection.

That pattern matters more than the press-release adjectives. Glasses OEMs are racing on frames and AI features, but the hard problems — brightness, power, color, waveguide coupling, thermal — live in the light engine. TDK is trying to sell a complete subsystem into that bottleneck rather than another discrete component. The release also names consumer, automotive, industrial, and mobility as long-term targets for the combined display systems. None of those verticals has a ship date attached.

What is still missing

No price. No headcount transfer details. No named customer design-win. No confirmation that OQmented’s commercial light engines keep shipping under a TDK badge versus disappearing into R&D. Treat the announcement as a supply-chain consolidation signal: another major components house is assembling the full stack for AI glasses displays while Meta, Snap, XREAL, Samsung, and HTC fight over the finished product. The interesting test arrives when AIsight shows a qualified light engine with yield and power numbers — not another architecture slide.
