VR.org: Fall Glasses Platforms Split — Stores Without Hardware, Hardware Without a Store

VR.org staff writer Jordan Kuo framed the late-September glasses RACE less as a SHIP DATE contest and more as a DISTRIBUTION problem. On September 28, 2026, his brief notes that developers collected RELEASE NOTES faster than buyers collected HARDWARE — Google, Meta, and Snap each moved toolkit versions while Snap SPECS, XREAL AURA, and Samsung-built audio glasses still lack a firm consumer date.

The split Kuo maps is AWKWARD on purpose. Snap and XREAL have a PATH to publish with almost no GLASSES in customers’ hands. Meta has GLASSES on shelves and no public STORE for third-party toolkit apps. Google’s audio and display glasses stack currently has NEITHER a finished CHANNEL nor a ship DATE. For small teams, the useful question is which DOOR opens first, not which FRAME arrives first.

Snap built the STORE first

Snap’s developer portal already sells itself as the place to build, publish, and manage SPECS LENSES. Lens Studio 5.24.0 turned My Lenses into a SPECS DevPortal for Specs developer accounts — publishing plumbing that looks finished before the HARDWARE does. A June developer post added a Native Development Kit for C and C++, and Commerce Kit is slated to power in-Lens purchases at LAUNCH. CLAD, Snap’s agentic tooling, remains in PREVIEW.

HARDWARE is thinner. Developer time with pre-launch Specs still means booking a full-day SESSION at a Snap office in Los Angeles, London, Amsterdam, or Vienna. Consumers get a mall try-on: Snap’s September 16 newsroom post says SPECS First Look opens at Westfield Century City on October 1, while Westfield’s own listing runs October 2 through November 7, Thursdays to Sundays. Shipping remains “expected to begin later this FALL” in the US, UK, and France — $2,195 for the base kit, still without a calendar DAY.

Google has BUILDS and nowhere to send them

Android XR’s glasses libraries moved on September 23 — Jetpack Projected 1.0.0-alpha13 and Compose Glimmer 1.0.0-alpha20 — the same day as Meta Connect. The SDK banner still reads Developer Preview 4. A glasses experience is a dedicated ACTIVITY that runs inside a phone app and projects to the frames; testing pairs Audio Glasses or Display Glasses virtual devices with a phone emulator in Android Studio Canary.

One sentence on Google’s packaging page outweighs both libraries: app DISTRIBUTION through Google Play is only available for immersive apps on XR HEADSETS and wired XR glasses. For audio and display glasses, developers are told to build, test on the emulator, and “STAY TUNED.” Warby Parker and Gentle Monster still offer EMAIL sign-up, not a PREORDER, for the Samsung-built audio pair due “this fall.”

XREAL sits on the RIGHT side of Play’s line

AURA is the exception inside Android XR. Google’s own page calls it wired XR GLASSES, which puts it where Play DISTRIBUTION already works. Reaching the device is harder: XREAL still says “Coming in Fall 2026” at a base price that “will not exceed US$1,500,” with two of three reservation tiers sold out. Developers entered through the Android XR Developer Catalyst Program — applications closed June 30, selections by July 15, accepted teams order a free DEVICE. The launch catalog is being written by a cohort chosen in JULY.

Meta has the GLASSES and not the door

Meta Ray-Ban Display with Neural Band
Meta Ray-Ban Display reaches France, Italy, and Germany on October 13 — toolkit publishing still says “soon.” Image: Meta newsroom.

Meta’s problem is the inverse. After a year in developer preview, Wearables Device Access Toolkit 1.0 is tagged as a STABLE release that begins rolling out September 30, 2026 — voice invocation, camera CAPTURE, motion streaming, and Neural Band input across display and displayless AI GLASSES. The Ray-Ban Display it supports reaches stores in France, Italy, and Germany on October 13. That is the only firm HARDWARE date on Kuo’s calendar, and it belongs to glasses US buyers have already had for a YEAR.

PUBLISHING is the gap. Meta’s FAQ still says developers will “soon” submit toolkit and web app EXPERIENCES, with more to share on submission TIMING. iOS adds a second lock Meta does not hold: on the toolkit GitHub forum, a developer reported Apple rejecting an app that declares com.meta.ar.wearable pending MFi Product Plan authorization and a PPID from Meta. The reply — “DAT 1.0 doesn’t change this YET” — keeps TestFlight open while App Store ACCESS for third parties stays blocked.

Why the DOOR matters more than the frame

Kuo’s close is the beat that matters for BUILDERS this week. Snap and XREAL have STORES waiting on hardware few developers have held. Meta has HARDWARE waiting on a store, a “soon” on its own publishing, and an iOS path that also runs through Apple’s accessory RULES. Google has an EMULATOR, two alpha libraries, and a distribution page that has said “STAY TUNED” since May. Whichever of the three fall pairs ships first may reach BUYERS before most of the people building for it can.
