Backend strings spotted by Brad Lynch point to a Frame purchase promo for Valve’s 2020 VR flagship. Price and ship day are still blank.
Valve still has not named a consumer price or a calendar day for Steam Frame, its streaming-first standalone headset. What did show up in Steam’s backend today is quieter and more specific: strings for a hardware promotion that would hand buyers a free copy of Half-Life: Alyx.
What Lynch found
Road to VR and Notebookcheck, both dated September 1, 2026, report that VR analyst Brad Lynch pulled Steam client strings including AccountHardwarePromotions, HLAlyxPromoButtons, and Frame Alyx Promo. That is the same pattern Valve used when Index owners received Alyx for free; that Index bundle is still live when the headset is in stock.
Valve has not posted an official promo page. The strings are evidence of work in progress, not a confirmed checkout flow. Treat it as a strong signal, not a press release.
Why the bundle matters now
Alyx still lists at $59.99 on Steam and remains the default AAA reference title for PC VR. Frame is positioned as a PC-streaming headset first, with a dedicated 6 GHz wireless adapter in the box, and as a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SteamOS device second. Giving away the franchise’s VR peak is a straightforward way to put a day-one destination on a product that still lacks a public MSRP.
It also exposes a hard limit. Alyx is not on Valve’s certified standalone Frame list. Road to VR notes the title is too heavy for current mobile silicon as shipped. Valve told UploadVR last year it hoped to get Alyx running smoothly standalone; that work has not been publicly demonstrated as shipping. For most buyers, a free license still means streaming from a capable PC, not a native Frame install.
The calendar Valve still will not fill in
Frame was announced for an early / summer 2026 window. As of this writing Valve has cleared the usual pre-launch gates in public reporting (US radio authorization, warehouse inventory, a growing “Great on Frame” catalog) without naming day or price. Notebookcheck relays unconfirmed chatter of shipments as early as September 14. That date is not Valve’s.
If the Alyx promo ships with the headset, it will look familiar: Index buyers already lived that playbook. The open questions that actually move the market are unchanged. What does Frame cost, when can you buy one, and does the free license play on-device or only over the PC pipe?
