Meta’s personal agent just CLAIMED the SPOT that used to belong to chatbots. On SEPTEMBER 20, Apple’s U.S. FREE iPhone chart put Muse from Meta at NUMBER ONE — ahead of OpenAI’s ChatGPT at number two — roughly TWELVE DAYS after Muse’s U.S. LAUNCH.

We verified the ranking against Apple’s own top-free RSS feed on the evening of September 20. Muse sat FIRST. ChatGPT sat SECOND. Google Gemini landed around TENTH. That is DOWNLOAD MOMENTUM, not a VERDICT on daily USE.
Charts Measure Installs. They Do Not Measure Habit.
Apple rebuilds the FREE chart from recent install activity, so a young app with a hard marketing PUSH can leapfrog a rival that still owns the room. MIXED and 9to5Mac flagged the same climb earlier in the week; the SEPTEMBER 20 reading keeps Muse on top.
The TOP GROSSING chart tells the other story. In the same evening snapshot, ChatGPT still LED REVENUE. Claude and Grok appeared deeper in that list. Muse did NOT show inside the top 50 grossing apps — which matches Meta’s own line that Muse is “FREE for most of what people need,” with paid tiers still quiet on Apple’s money board.

Why This Matters for Glasses Week
Muse is not meant to live forever on a phone. Meta’s SEPTEMBER 8 launch post says the agent is rolling out in the U.S. on iOS, Android, and muse.ai — and is COMING SOON to AI GLASSES, without a SHIP date or MODEL list.
That glasses HOOK is the metaverse angle. A screenless pair needs an agent that can finish a TASK — open a browser, fill a FORM, ask before it sends mail or spends money — more than it needs another floating chatbot. Meta says Muse runs inside Muse Secure VM, with a separate SENTINEL agent gating outbound actions, and that people APPROVE sensitive STEPS.

Mid-September also brought a Mac app, which we covered when Meta pushed desktop FILES, Mail, and Calendar hooks while glasses remained “coming soon.” CONNECT follows on SEPTEMBER 23–24. Meta has not said which glasses get Muse first, or when.

What the Number Actually Buys Meta
A NUMBER-ONE free chart day buys ATTENTION three days before Connect. It does not prove retention, it does not prove subscription take rate, and it does not prove that bystanders will accept agent-driven glasses in public. ChatGPT still OWNS the GROSSING lane. Muse OWNS the INSTALL spike.
For XR watchers, the useful read is narrower: Meta is training phone users on an agent-shaped product BEFORE it tries to put that agent on a face. Whether Connect turns “coming soon” into a DATE is the next CHECK.
