Steam Machine Still Can’t Stream VR to Steam Frame. Valve Lists It as Coming Soon.

Valve sells Steam Frame and Steam Machine as a family. The headset page still treats the living-room box as a HOST that is NOT ready. As of September 18 — four days after Frame purchase emails started giving buyers a 72-HOUR window to pay — Valve’s own product copy still lists Steam Machine as “(COMING SOON!)” for streaming to the headset.

The gap matters for anyone who planned to PAIR a $1,059 U.S. Frame with a $1,049 Steam Machine instead of a gaming PC. PixelArena’s September 20 rundown, drawing on Valve’s pages and the Club386 review, is the clearest public STATE of play this week.

Two Product Pages, Two Messages

Steam Frame’s host line is blunt: “Stream from your PC, laptop, Steam Deck or (COMING SOON!) Steam Machine.” Steam Machine’s page reads finished: it calls the box “the PERFECT HOST PC for streaming to other devices,” and says you can “easily stream” to Steam Deck, Steam Frame, or any device running Steam or Steam Link.

Neither page SEPARATES VR titles from flat games. Valve has not said whether non-VR streaming from a Machine to a Frame works today. The VR hole itself is not brand-new — Machine LAUNCHED in June WITHOUT VR support — but the headset it was meant to serve is now on SALE.

Club386: Impossible Today, Promised Later

Club386’s September 14 Steam Frame review is the plainest on-record statement. “It’s currently IMPOSSIBLE to stream VR games from a Steam Machine at the time of writing,” Samuel Willetts wrote. “Valve PROMISES this ability is coming in future, but you’ll need a WINDOWS PC to hand for the moment.”

“Windows PC” is the reviewer’s phrasing. Valve’s own host list also names laptops and the Steam Deck, without spelling out which hosts handle VR rather than flat titles. Club386 did confirm one link that WORKS across the family: the same microSD card can carry a game library between Frame, Machine, and Deck without tinkering — useful, but not a substitute for live VR STREAMING.

What Works Instead

For PC VR on Frame today, Valve points owners at the included 6GHz wireless adapter for a dedicated STREAMING link, plus a second radio for Wi-Fi. Early reviews — PC Gamer, Tom’s Hardware, Engadget, Road to VR, and Club386 — largely praise that PC path even when they argue about battery life and the $1,059 PRICE.

The other route SKIPS the host. Valve’s launch materials count OVER 100 Steam Frame Standalone Verified games that run on the headset’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 without a PC. That library does NOT CLOSE the Machine gap for owners who bought the box as a living-room STREAMING companion.

Linux work is MOVING — SteamVR 2.17 tightened wired headset support on Linux, and the 2.17.10 hotfix addressed AMD GPU crashes — but Valve has not tied those notes to a Machine-to-Frame VR date. Until the parentheses disappear, a gaming PC remains the reliable STREAMING HOST for Steam Frame’s PC VR library.
