Open Season: Meta’s First Original Immersive Series Hits Quest September 29

Meta is COMMISSIONING its own immersive video for the FIRST time. Open Season, the opening title in a new Meta Presents strand, follows four-time NBA champion Draymond Green through REAL therapy sessions and lands on the TV app on Meta Quest on SEPTEMBER 29.

Mixed-News (Chris Steven, Sep 25) frames the distinction cleanly: ESPN’s college football feed and Industrial Light & Magic’s National Geographic: Beyond are licensed programming Meta bought in at Connect. Open Season is Meta PAYING to MAKE the show. That is a habit the company has not had before.

Meta’s own announcement (Sep 23) says the series was produced by Skydance Sports, Green’s company The New Media, and Meta. It was shot exclusively in stereoscopic 180° immersive video on Blackmagic URSA cameras — a fixed seat in the ROOM with Green and sports psychologist Dr. Carrie Hastings.

Therapy, Not Courtside Spectacle

The SUBJECT is what most sports documentaries leave out. Green works with Hastings through STRUGGLE and triumph across his 2025–2026 Golden State Warriors season. Meta describes him as an emotional player and vocal leader who still racks up technical fouls, ejections, and occasional SUSPENSIONS — and who struggled to SEEK help in a culture that can STIGMATIZE therapy.

Open Season puts the viewer in that CONVERSATION. Meta says the format creates “a sense of PRESENCE and proximity that’s impossible to get from flat screens.” Mixed-News notes the tradeoff: stereoscopic 180 is a half-sphere in front of you. The camera does not MOVE, and neither does the VIEWER. Two chairs and an unscripted talk is about the easiest ask that format can handle — which is exactly why it FITS.

One Title, One Date, One Platform

Meta has not named a second Meta Presents title. It publishes no episode count, no runtime, and no price. It also does not say whether Open Season reaches the $1,299.99 Meta VR Glasses arriving in SPRING 2027. The ONLY route Meta gives today is the TV app on QUEST.

Everything else in that TV app still comes from somebody else — Disney+, Peacock, and the sport and nature deals Meta signed for this year. Commissioning a documentary is a different kind of SPEND, and Meta carries the WHOLE of it. For readers tracking Immersive Sports and IMAX Enhanced film licensing, this post isolates the ORIGINAL-content BET: Meta Presents starts with one ATHLETE, one THERAPIST, and one SEPTEMBER date.

For now, Meta Presents is one TITLE, one DATE, and one PLATFORM: Open Season, September 29, the TV app on Quest. Whether that strand becomes a slate — or stays a Connect one-off — is the NEXT question Meta has not answered.
