Meta Promises 100+ Immersive Live Sports Events a Year as Apple Stalls at Ten

At CONNECT 2026, Meta put a number no headset maker has put in writing before: OVER 100 immersive live sports events each year once META VR GLASSES go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99. The PLEDGE lands against a thinner Apple RECORD — roughly TEN LIVE Immersive games on VISION PRO — and a Bloomberg report that Apple is already PARING the team that makes that content.

VR.org’s Sam Whitfield (Sep 23) frames the announcement as a VOLUME BET: Meta wants immersive sports to be a REASON to buy the glasses, not a rare DEMO. Meta’s own Newsroom post and Connect roundup spell out the same CORE CLAIM — with small, important INCONSISTENCIES in who counts toward the total.

What Meta Promised — and What It Did Not

The body of Meta’s Newsroom piece credits the 100-PLUS slate to partners MLB, NBC SPORTS, TNT SPORTS, and UFC. The takeaway line above it describes “100+ immersive live US sports events each year with ESPN, TNT Sports, and more,” which narrows geography and slides ESPN inside the count. A product FOOTNOTE mentions “Select NBA games only” and that a SUBSCRIPTION may be required — even though the NBA is not always listed among named partners. Hands-on demos used NBA footage, so basketball likely rides through ESPN or NBC Sports rights, but Meta has not said which.

Sooner than the glasses, ESPN is building what Meta calls “IMMERSIVE SPORTS” — front-row seat, 8K STREAMING, 180-DEGREE views — starting with COLLEGE FOOTBALL THIS YEAR on META QUEST, with more sports in 2027. Meta has named no games, dates, apps, or prices for that Quest window. Cost is equally FUZZY: some hands-on coverage suggested courtside seats come with the headset, while Meta’s footnote says a subscription may be required. UFC is the clearest CAUTION — Meta is an Official Fan Technology Partner, but US live rights sit with PARAMOUNT+ under a multiyear deal.

Apple’s Live Ledger: Six Lakers, Four Baseball

Apple has been in immersive sports since a February 2024 MLS Cup highlights film, followed by several produced (non-live) Immersive sports titles. Live is the harder BAR. Through Charter’s SPECTRUM FRONT ROW, Vision Pro owners watched SIX LAKERS games live in Apple Immersive between January 9 and March 30, 2026 — live mostly limited to the Lakers’ regional territory, with delayed replays elsewhere. Then Apple’s own production streamed FOUR Friday Night Baseball games live in Immersive from August 28 to September 18 — 8K 3D, 180-DEGREE FOV, for Apple TV subscribers in nine countries. Six plus four is TEN. Nothing further is SCHEDULED.

Between those pilots, Bloomberg (Aug 21) reported Apple SHRINKING its immersive video team. MacRumors summarized the math: films can cost MILLIONS, and too few people actively use the device. Apple plans fewer IN-HOUSE films and more THIRD-PARTY content. It proved live Immersive sports can hit BROADCAST quality — then declined to fund the VOLUME that would sell headsets.

Meta Has Run This Play Before

Meta’s sports history cuts both ways. An MLB Quest app launched in 2020; NBA League Pass streamed through Horizon Venues until Venues folded into Horizon Worlds in 2022. By January 2023 Meta extended an NBA deal to 52 League Pass games a season, including five immersive 180-degree monoscopic games. For 2024–25 it promoted 52 free immersive games in the XTADIUM app (US only). That arrangement has since LAPSED without fanfare — YBVR now says NBA and WNBA spaces are no longer available, and the NBA is not among Wednesday’s named partners. TNT Sports streamed the 2025 Stanley Cup Final in Xtadium; ESPN supplied 180-degree highlights via Edge in 2024. Relationships EXIST. DURABILITY has been the open question.

Why the Math Might Differ This Time

Audience size decided Apple’s RETREAT. Vision Pro shipments stay tiny relative to Meta’s installed Quest base, and the device now starts near $3,699. Meta’s ESPN coverage starts this year on headsets people already own, and the glasses that carry the larger 2027 slate cost roughly a THIRD of Vision Pro. Neither fact guarantees the economics WORK — live 180-degree production is expensive on any platform, and Meta has not said who PAYS. What the announcement does establish is that immersive rights are now negotiated across more than one PLATFORM. MLB produced live Immersive with Apple this season and appears on Meta’s 2027 partner list. Watch for partner-level schedules, whether Paramount+ and similar subs carry immersive feeds, and the first published college football slate on Quest — that will show whether “this year” means a handful of games or a real SEASON.
