Mixed News caught the CONTRADICTION on September 28: Meta says its AI glasses will be the first consumer devices to CAPTURE and EXPERIENCE video in Dolby Atmos with 360-degree SPATIAL sound later this year — but Ray-Ban Meta Audio, the $349 pair ANNOUNCED the same day at Connect, has NO CAMERA.

The CLAIM sits in Meta’s September 23 newsroom post: “Later this year, Meta AI glasses will be the first consumer devices that enable users to capture and experience videos in Dolby Atmos with 360-degree spatial sound.” Meta adds “just record and your glasses handle everything,” then names no MODEL, no software VERSION, and no day inside that WINDOW.
Gen 3 Has the Mics and the Lens
Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) is the SKU that actually looks BUILT for the promise. Meta lists a new six-microphone ARRAY that cuts more than 90% of background NOISE, a 12 MP camera, and 3K Ultra HD video, with up to nine hours of BATTERY from $449 in the US. EssilorLuxottica’s Connect release REPEATS “support for Dolby Atmos” alongside Dynamic Photo and Landscape Crop Mode.

Dolby’s own Connect release goes further, saying Meta AI glasses are the first global consumer device capable of CAPTURING audio in Dolby Atmos, with playback paths into INSTAGRAM. Neither Meta nor Dolby spells out bit rate, channel LAYOUT, or which frames in the 100-plus style CATALOG get the feature first.
Audio Sells Sound Without a Sensor
Ray-Ban Meta Audio is Meta’s answer to camera privacy PUSHBACK: 43 grams, Clubmaster and Burbank styles, up to 12 hours on the frames plus 48 from the case, shipping OCTOBER 13 at $349. It is the pair Meta is selling on SOUND — and the one pair that cannot RECORD the spatial video Meta is promising.

Meta has not said whether Gen 2 Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta frames are in SCOPE either. The six-microphone array is a Gen 3 PART. “Later this year” runs through December 31, while Gen 3 has been on SALE since September 23 and the camera-free Audio line is already taking MONEY.
Hardware Ahead of the Feature
That is the story Mixed News is PRESSING: the hardware catalog is racing ahead of the Atmos SOFTWARE. Meta wants more than 100 glasses OPTIONS across Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Meta Glasses by year-end. Spatial capture needs a CAMERA, a mic array Meta will actually LICENSE for Atmos, and a playback PATH that works on Instagram and the glasses themselves. Until Meta NAMES the models and a build, Atmos stays a Connect SENTENCE — not a checkbox buyers can VERIFY on the Audio SKU.
