COVR Aims at Hardcore VR Milsim. Quest and SteamVR in Q4.

XREAL Games is aiming COVR at the hard end of VR milsim: solo or co-op CQB on Meta Quest and SteamVR in Q4 2026, after Onward’s active development ended.

UploadVR and TechTimes covered the August VR Games Showcase beat: Budapest’s XREAL Games (Zero Caliber) locked COVR for Meta Quest and SteamVR before the end of 2026. The Steam listing now reads Q4 2026. No day, no price.

The Onward-shaped hole

TechTimes dates the vacuum to June 2025, when Meta ended active Onward development at Downpour Interactive and folded staff into Camouflaj. Onward remains on Quest and Steam for critical fixes only—no new maps or features. That left hardcore squad CQB without a studio actively shipping for it. XREAL’s own line, from an April 2026 note quoted by TechTimes, draws a bright line with its other franchise: “Zero Caliber sits between arcade and realism. This does not.”

What COVR claims to be

Steam’s copy is blunt: next-gen visuals, authentic weapon handling, deliberate movement, and combat that “rewards situational awareness over reckless play.” Deploy solo or in online co-op. Classic tactical objectives, randomized missions, room clears, angle management. UploadVR’s showcase write-up adds that the studio wants presentation to reinforce intensity, and says standalone is not an afterthought—“focused on pushing each platform as far as possible.” Road to VR’s August recap also flagged stealth alongside realism and tension, which points past pure breach-and-clear.

The open engineering question

CQB milsim is CPU-heavy: AI that reacts to breaches, updates pathfinding through connected rooms, and reads threat lines in corridors. On Quest 3, rendering and simulation share the XR2 Gen 2. TechTimes is right that the interesting proof is whether XREAL’s Unreal build keeps that density on standalone without gutting the atmosphere the teaser sells. No public hands-on yet. The Steam page points players to community playtests for a reason.

Context on the same calendar: Zero Caliber 2 Remastered still targets PS VR2 in October. COVR is the harder sibling, not a rebadge. Wishlist on Steam and the Meta Horizon Store; treat Q4 as a window, not a day, until XREAL posts one.
