Apple’s planned OVERHAUL of Vision Pro is no longer a SETTLED roadmap item. In late-September reporting that crystallized into a September 30 news cycle, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman called the next-generation headset project — internally N224 — “LIFE SUPPORT,” raising a REAL chance the redesign NEVER ships even as Apple keeps PROTOTYPE work alive.

That framing matters because Meta Watcher already covered Apple’s FOUR DESIGN CONCEPTS for a Vision Pro successor on September 27. The NEW beat is NOT another leak about titanium versus plastic. It is Gurman’s SHARPER assessment that N224 sits on the EDGE of cancellation while smart glasses absorb people, budget, and executive attention inside the Vision Products Group.
What “Life Support” Actually Means
According to write-ups summarizing Gurman’s Power On newsletter — including The Apple Post, Gizmodo, and Cult of Mac — Apple is still experimenting with multiple N224 approaches. One path moves more compute off the face into an EXTERNAL PUCK, echoing Meta’s just-announced VR Glasses architecture. Other concepts keep an integrated egg-shaped body but chase WEIGHT and COST with different materials.
Existence of prototypes is NOT a SHIP DATE. Gurman’s “life support” language is the SIGNAL that leadership has NOT locked a FORM FACTOR, and that the project can STILL be KILLED before customers ever see it. If N224 CONTINUES, the same reporting points to LATE 2028 or EARLY 2029 — years after Apple’s first no-display smart glasses, which remain aimed at LATE 2027.

Why Meta’s VR Glasses Raise the Stakes
Gizmodo’s September 30 analysis ties the internal chill directly to Meta Connect: Meta VR Glasses put roughly 100 GRAMS on the face, park Snapdragon Reality Elite compute in a pocket puck, and target SPRING 2027 at $1,299.99. That combination UNDERCUTS the WEIGHT complaint that has dogged Vision Pro since the 2024 launch — and it arrives while Apple’s SUCCESSOR headset, if it SURVIVES, is YEARS away.

Apple already uses an EXTERNAL BATTERY on today’s Vision Pro. A full COMPUTE puck would be a BIGGER philosophical break — and some senior hardware voices are reportedly DEAD SET against that trade. The unresolved debate itself is part of why the program looks FRAGILE: you cannot schedule a MASS-MARKET refresh while the product’s basic topology is still CONTESTED.

Management Distance and the Glasses Pivot
Gurman’s Kremlinology note is blunt. Vision Products used to sit closer to John Ternus; with Ternus now CEO and Johny Srouji as chief HARDWARE officer, the headset org is a LAYER REMOVED from the top. Meanwhile engineers once assigned to other headset tracks have been REASSIGNED toward smart glasses — the category Apple increasingly treats as the MAINSTREAM face computer.
That shift already claimed “Vision Air” / N100, the lighter cheaper headset concept that was reportedly SHELVED. N224 survived that cull, but “life support” is NOT a vote of CONFIDENCE. Apple’s first glasses are still described as CAMERA-, MIC-, and SPEAKER-first AI wearables WITHOUT displays — a Ray-Ban-class product, not a waveguide AR headset — with true see-through AR left for a longer horizon.
Ternus Still Praises Vision Pro — Without a Promise
In a recent Clique TV interview cited across the same reports, Ternus called Vision Pro an “AMAZING DEVICE” and compared it to the EARLY DAYS of personal computers — “the early days of a LONG JOURNEY.” He highlighted surgeon interest. He did NOT pledge a next-generation headset on any calendar. Praise WITHOUT a ROADMAP is consistent with a company that wants spatial computing to live on, even if the enclosed headset form factor is no longer the GROWTH bet.
Apple did refresh Vision Pro with an M5 chip in 2025 while keeping the same basic design, weight, and premium positioning (now about $3,699). That refresh BOUGHT TIME. It did not settle whether Apple will fund another enclosed headset when Meta, Samsung, Snap, and Valve are all compressing face WEIGHT, price, or both.
What Metaverse Watcher Readers Should Watch Next
Treat N224 as CONTINGENT, not canceled. Gurman has said the internal back-and-forth has run for YEARS; status reports FLIP as executives REASSESS XR value and development risk. The PRACTICAL near-term Apple story remains smart glasses for LATE 2027 and continued visionOS investment that can feed smaller wearables even if a full Vision Pro sequel DIES.
For the competitive board: Meta’s SPRING 2027 VR Glasses, Snap SPECS shipping this fall, Samsung’s Android XR eyewear pipeline, and Valve’s already-shipping Steam Frame all raise the opportunity COST of Apple WAITING until 2028–2029. If N224 only ships as another heavy premium headset after that window, it may arrive into a market that already DECIDED glasses-form VR and AI eyewear are the DEFAULT face computers.
