Meta is preparing a camera-free smart glasses model, internally code-named Luna, with a possible unveil at Meta Connect on September 23–24 and shipments targeted for October, Engadget and a Reuters brief both report, citing The Information. Meta did not immediately comment.
The pitch is blunt: keep the AI conversation path, drop the component that has made current Ray-Ban Meta pairs a bystander-privacy flashpoint. According to the same reporting, Luna carries six microphones so wearers can talk to Meta’s AI chatbot and Muse, Meta’s consumer AI agent, plus a side button for quick Meta AI activation and speakers similar to today’s models. Engadget adds two style names — Clubmaster and Burbank — and slimmer temples meant to read as ordinary eyewear.
Why Meta would ship a no-camera pair now
Camera glasses have sold, but the social cost is real. Recording-LED loopholes, school and transit backlash, and “pervert glasses” framing have trailed the category all year. A model with no camera cannot close every microphone concern, but it removes the visual capture threat that has defined the public fight. Engadget frames Luna as a way to convert buyers who like the AI features and still refuse a lens pointed at strangers.
That sits beside — not instead of — the camera stack Meta is still expected to talk about at Connect. A September 15 Smart Wearables countdown already flagged Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 work under other codenames. Luna is a different bet: privacy as a SKU, timed for a fall ship window rather than another year of LED patches.
What is still missing
Price, exact retail name, regions, and whether Luna ships under the Ray-Ban Meta brand or a quieter EssilorLuxottica trim are not in the public brief. The October target and Connect stage date are the hard calendar claims. Until Meta speaks, treat Clubmaster, Burbank, and the six-mic layout as reportage from people familiar with the plans — not a product sheet.
