PS VR2 Still Missing From US PlayStation Direct: What We Know

PS VR2 still cannot be bought new from Sony in the United States. When Metaverse Watcher checked on the evening of October 24, 2026, the US PlayStation Direct product addresses for the headset and for the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle both returned an HTTP 404 error. Sony’s US “Shop PS VR2” page listed only one item, the $49.99 PS VR2 Sense Controller Charging Station, marked “Currently Unavailable.” The same check on Sony’s UK store showed PlayStation VR2 at £399.99 with a working Add to Cart button.

That makes this an eleven-day-old gap, not a one-off glitch. The 404 was first spotted around October 13, and Sony has still not said whether it is a stock problem, a store change or the quiet end of new US sales. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and what it means if you are shopping for a VR headset before the holidays.

PS VR2 US availability: the timeline

  • March 2025. Sony cut PS VR2 to $399.99 in the US, the same price for the standard headset and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, according to the PlayStation Blog.
  • September 16, 2026. PC Guide reported the headset out of stock at the US PlayStation store and at Target, with only used or refurbished units elsewhere. Sony gave no comment.
  • September 18. VR.org found the US listing at $399 with “Currently Unavailable,” and Best Buy marketplace sellers asking $855.20 and $894 for a new bundle.
  • Around October 13. The US PlayStation Direct product page began returning a 404, as EndeNews and other outlets reported. European stores were unaffected.
  • October 24. Our own check: both US headset pages still 404, the US hub lists only the charging station, and the UK store still sells the headset.

What is confirmed, and what is not

ClaimStatus as of October 24, 2026
US PlayStation Direct no longer offers PS VR2 for saleConfirmed (product pages return 404)
UK and EU stores still sell itConfirmed (UK: £399.99, Add to Cart live)
Sony has discontinued PS VR2Not announced
Sony has ended PS VR2 software or PSN supportNo evidence; games continue to ship
Production has stoppedReported, not confirmed by Sony

The production question has history. In March 2024, Bloomberg reported that Sony had paused PS VR2 production after building well over 2 million units against slowing sales. No report since has said production resumed. If it never did, a US channel running dry is exactly what a sold-through backlog would look like. That is an inference, and Sony has not confirmed it.

The other signal is the patent file. As we reported on October 5, Sony assigned a portfolio of 419 XR-related patents and filings to Meta under a confirmatory assignment signed in December 2025. Neither company has explained the deal, and AppleInsider noted on October 20 that it also raises questions for Vision Pro owners who rely on the PS VR2 Sense controllers Apple sells for $249.95.

What it means if you already own PS VR2

Nothing changes today. A missing store page does not affect hardware already in homes, and new PS VR2 releases keep arriving: Zero Caliber 2 lands on PS VR2 on November 5. The PC adapter also keeps the headset useful beyond the PS5, and modders have even brought the Sense controllers to Steam Frame. The real risk is longer term: fewer new buyers means a smaller audience for studios deciding whether to port to PlayStation.

What to buy instead in the US

If you want PS5 VR specifically, there is no substitute: PS VR2 is the only headset that plays PS5 VR games. Used and refurbished units are the realistic route, and you should compare them against Sony’s $399.99 list price before paying a marketplace premium. If you mainly want VR, not PlayStation VR, the US market has better-stocked options. Our best VR headsets of 2026 guide ranks them, the Quest 3 vs Quest 3S guide covers the standalone choice, and Steam Frame vs Quest 3 covers PC VR, though Valve’s queue now runs into 2027 for some reservations.

The bottom line

Eleven days in, the US 404 looks less like a broken link and more like a closed channel. But the only facts on the record are an empty US store and a stocked European one. Until Sony speaks, treat PS VR2 as unavailable new in the US, not as discontinued. We will update this story if Sony comments or the listing returns.
