Valve’s Steam Frame ‘Enthusiast’ Strap Is Back in Focus, With a Hot-Swap Battery, Index-Style Audio, and Still No Price or Date

Valve’s promised UPGRADE for the Steam Frame’s two most common complaints, BATTERY life and AUDIO, is BACK in the headlines. On October 15, Road to VR reported that Valve is BUILDING a replacement HEAD STRAP with a HOT-SWAPPABLE battery and off-ear speakers modeled on the VALVE INDEX. The renewed attention lands just DAYS after Valve RETIRED the Index itself. What the coverage does NOT contain is anything NEW from Valve: there is still NO price, NO release date, and NO official photo.

Where the Strap Story Actually Comes From

The SOURCE is a pre-launch interview, not a FRESH announcement. Road to VR credits PC Gamer, whose story is dated September 14, 2026, the day Valve opened Steam Frame sign-ups. In it, Valve software engineer Jeremy Selan said the company is “working on a future first-party accessory where it will plug in and replace the existing” strap, and that it “will include a hot-swappable battery, and then premium Index-style off-ear audio.” Asked for TIMING, he said only that Valve is “working to make it available as soon as we can.”

Hardware engineer Joy Lyons ADDED that the accessory is “not available at launch, but it’s coming soon, and we’ll have pricing and details on that.” Those details have NOT appeared in the MONTH since.

The same pair gave The Verge a SLIGHTLY fuller picture on the same day. Its report describes a modular “enthusiast kit” that swaps out the ENTIRE head strap, battery, and audio assembly. The kit would let owners STACK a second magnetic battery onto the first to DOUBLE capacity, add a PREMIUM set of floating speakers based on the Valve Index Ear Speakers, and include EXTRA eye spacers for adjusting lens distance. The Verge, too, said it had NO date, price, or photo.

The NAME predates both interviews. In June, PCMag found it in the Steam Frame’s FCC HEALTH and safety manual, which states that “the Frame Enthusiast kit also includes a hot-swappable lithium-ion battery pack” and tells users to use ONLY that pack “or an authorized replacement battery pack.”

Why the Strap Matters More Now

The Frame’s design puts the battery, the microSD slot, and the speakers in the REAR strap, while the CORE module holding the chip, storage, and optics detaches with THREE small switches, according to PC Gamer. That split is what makes a DROP-IN replacement strap POSSIBLE at all. Road to VR puts current endurance at roughly 1 to 1.5 hours of mixed use and notes the headset has NO 3.5mm headphone jack, leaving a USB-C adapter with a built-in DAC or BLUETOOTH headphones as the ONLY wired-audio workarounds.

Lyons also explained why the STOCK audio looks the way it does. Valve wanted the headset COLLAPSIBLE for travel, so it kept EXTRA structure out of the HEADBAND and put the drivers in the strap. Because those drivers sit close to the sensor-packed core module, bass VIBRATION “caused the screen to jump,” she told PC Gamer. Valve’s fix was to FLIP one driver on each side so the sound stays in phase while the vibration cancels.

The TIMING adds weight to the promise. On October 13, Valve’s “Valve Index Sunset” post on Steam confirmed the Index is NO LONGER produced and cut remaining stock by 20%, as we reported. With Index production over, the strap is now the ONLY announced way to get Index-style off-ear audio on Valve’s CURRENT headset.

What Is Still Unknown

  • PRICE. Valve has published NONE. For scale, its existing ergonomic accessories kit sells for $59, per The Verge, but that kit contains NO electronics.
  • RELEASE DATE. “Coming soon” in mid-September remains the LATEST official word.
  • BATTERY behavior. The FCC manual says “hot-swappable,” while The Verge describes STACKING a second pack. Valve has not explained whether the headset KEEPS RUNNING while a pack is removed.
  • ORDER priority. Valve’s headset queue already runs to “by December, or in 2027” for reservation holders, as we covered. Valve has NOT said how strap SUPPLY will be allocated.

THIRD-PARTY makers are not WAITING. Valve’s public CAD release already includes a stripped-down model of the HEAD STRAP, and its expansion-port spec warns that a 6W accessory “will consume over 25% of the available battery capacity.” Any POWER-HUNGRY add-on will make a LARGER battery more valuable, whoever builds it.

The Bottom Line

The Enthusiast strap is REAL, it is FIRST-PARTY, and Valve has described it on record THREE times since June. It is also still UNPRICED and UNDATED. Until Valve publishes a store listing, buyers deciding on a Frame should judge it on the BATTERY and SPEAKERS in the box today, NOT on the upgrade.
