Steam Frame just got its own OPT-IN operating-system bump. Valve released SteamOS 0.4.1 on the headset’s BETA channel — a build separate from Steam Deck and Steam Machine — with SPECTATOR VIEW smoothing on by default, a new DOMINANT EYE picker, and an embedded SteamVR 2.18.1 stack.

The changelog is Valve’s. A Steam Frame news post confirms the beta is LIVE for owners who switch Settings → System → System Update Channel. GamingOnLinux mirrored the notes on September 26, 2026, and pointed back to the same Steam store announcements. This is Frame’s own SteamOS BRANCH, not a Deck point RELEASE wearing a new label.
Spectator View and Dominant Eye
The features streamers will feel FIRST sit in how Frame shares the headset feed. Spectator view is now SMOOTHED by default. A friend or producer can open it from a PC under Steam → Settings → Remote Play, or from any device that supports Steam Link, to PREVIEW what the wearer sees. Owners can also set a DOMINANT EYE in VR Settings; that eye controls spectator view, SCREENSHOTS, and related captures. If the soft look fights a live cut, a Developer option DISABLES the new SMOOTHING inside the headset.

Dashboard, Audio, and Wireless Fixes
Valve FIXED dashboard recentering that fired too often for some users, IMPROVED focus handling and gamepad navigation, and cleared a case of panel FLICKER. The on-screen KEYBOARD finally appears while streaming. Audio DOWNMIX and binaural rendering now MATCH volume across formats. Proximity sensor detection gets a model tweak. The embedded browser picks up CRASH fixes plus Linux H.264 detection work. Booting straight into Desktop mode can RETURN to Gaming mode again, and rare extra network interfaces no longer DISRUPT the wireless dongle PATH.

Valve’s italics line is easy to miss: this OS release INCLUDES SteamVR 2.18.1. That is the same SteamVR train Metaverse Watcher covered for USB tether work on Quest Steam Link — now RIDING inside Frame’s beta OS rather than as a desktop-only PATCH.
Companion Client Update
A paired Steam Client Update for Frame, dated September 25 in Valve’s news hub, IMPROVED color ACCURACY when streaming non-VR games from a Windows PC, added Show Battery PERCENTAGE on the Dashboard bar, and turned on gamepad NAVIGATION in the Streaming menu. None of that replaces the OS beta; it is the client HALF of the same weekend SHIP.
GamingOnLinux still describes early Frame ownership as ROUGH. This beta is Valve’s incremental RESPONSE — spectator polish, Dominant Eye, dashboard STABILITY — not a claim that day-one friction is finished. For buyers already on the waitlist or unboxing units NOW, the practical move is clear: flip the System Update Channel, TEST spectator view with a friend, and set Dominant Eye before you chase CLIP quality on Steam Frame.
