Valve Guide: Steam Frame Adapter Streaming Is Windows-Only for Now

Valve’s own Steam Frame support guide now DRAWS a HARD LINE around wireless PC streaming: “Full support for SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming via the wireless adapter are currently available on Windows only.” Mixed-News logged that wording at 14:42 UTC on October 1, 2026, and the same page also says SteamVR on Steam Machine and desktop Linux “isn’t fully supported at this time.”

That puts the CONFIGURATION Valve calls FULLY supported for adapter streaming on a Windows PC — not on the Steam Machine console Valve has pitched alongside the headset, and not on a default desktop Linux install. The company frames the LIMIT as TEMPORARY: “We’ll be working on expanded support following the launch of the Steam Frame.” It offers no DATE, release number, or scope for that expansion.

What the Guide Requires on Linux

Even for testers who stay on Linux, Valve’s guide sets two HARD requirements for the wireless DONGLE: SteamOS 3.9+ or Linux kernel 7.2+. SteamOS 3.9 is still unfinished in STABLE form. Valve’s newest line in that branch is SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta (September 25, 2026), which covers changes since the current stable SteamOS 3.8 RELEASE. Meeting the stated requirement on a Steam Machine therefore means OPTING into a beta channel — or running a kernel most distributions have not SHIPPED yet.

For testing from a Steam Machine in its CURRENT state, Valve recommends using Steam in Desktop Mode, opting into the SteamVR Beta, and LAUNCHING SteamVR MANUALLY before starting a VR game. That manual-launch WORKAROUND already matched earlier tracker replies; the support guide now locks the same pattern into Valve’s public HELP material.

Owners Report the Same Gaps

An information request titled “Steam Frame Linux support” on Valve’s SteamVR-for-Linux tracker had 24 comments from 15 accounts when Mixed-News read it on October 1. Reports LINE UP with the guide: one owner could not get the dongle to CONNECT under Linux Mint on a 7.0 kernel, then saw the adapter CONNECT on 7.2.6; another described Half-Life: Alyx LOCKING UP unless SteamVR was entered FIRST. A few CachyOS users report PC VR WORKING over the adapter once firewall RULES were CLEAR — but those are community RESULTS, not Valve’s definition of full SUPPORT.

Why It Matters for Steam Machine Buyers

Valve has MARKETED Steam Machine and Steam Frame as a PAIR. In September the company already CONFIRMED Steam Machine could not yet stream VR games to a Frame. The support guide now places that LIMITATION in Valve’s own FAQ rather than a forum reply, and EXTENDS it to desktop Linux and to the wireless adapter itself. Until expanded SUPPORT arrives, buyers who EXPECTED a Linux-native living-room STREAM path should PLAN around a Windows host if they need the adapter’s FULL path TODAY.

Metaverse Watcher will WATCH for a dated SteamOS or SteamVR CHANGELOG that LIFTS the Windows-only line. Until then, the clearest public STATEMENT is Valve’s own: full adapter streaming SUPPORT is on Windows, with Linux and Steam Machine still OUTSIDE that COMPLETE path.
