VRChat has MOVED its ENTIRE player base onto UNITY 6. Release 2026.3.3, build 1919, went LIVE on October 2, and VRChat’s own release notes say the engine is now “stable enough that we consider it ready for live.” The same notes carry a WARNING for the people who actually BUILD the platform’s WORLDS and AVATARS: do NOT follow.
“Nothing has changed about the SDK side. Do NOT upgrade your SDK projects to Unity 6. It will not work. We’ll let you know once that is ready,” the patch notes read. VRChat attaches NO DATE to that promise. Mixed-News (Chris Steven, October 4, 2026) flagged the SPLIT first; the wording above is taken directly from the official 2026.3.3 release notes.

From open beta to everyone
The TIMELINE is SHORT. VRChat’s docs list 2026.3.3 as an OPEN BETA on September 9 (build 1912), and Metaverse Watcher covered the Quest open beta moving to Unity 6 in September while creators stayed on the older toolchain. The live build REMOVES the opt-in. Anyone who launches VRChat now runs the Unity 6 CLIENT, while the content they UPLOAD is still built with the PREVIOUS Unity version the SDK supports.
VRChat says players “shouldn’t notice anything,” citing EXTENSIVE closed and open beta testing. That is the company’s claim, not an INDEPENDENT measurement. The practical RISK sits with world and avatar authors: a creator who upgrades a project to Unity 6 against the advice gets a BUILD that, by VRChat’s own account, “will not work.”
What players do get
- Desktop HUD: clickable buttons in the top corners for COMMON actions. Holding TAB frees the mouse cursor and lets desktop users SELECT players, portals, props, and prints. The face mirror can DOCK to the upper right, and the whole HUD can be switched OFF.
- Keyboard refresh: the in-app keyboard can be grabbed, resized, docked to the menu, or left in tracking space. It adds next-word PREDICTION from words you have typed before. VRChat says that history is stored LOCALLY per user and “never uploaded,” and suggestions turn off in Streamer Mode and in PIN or password fields.
- In-client news: patch notes, store updates, and world-specific items now APPEAR in the Quick Menu and Notification Center.
- Shop and mobile: a dedicated Profile Decorations tab sells items INDIVIDUALLY, the Shop now works on ANDROID, and the login flow was REBUILT on Android and iOS.
The FIX list is broad. VRChat says it REWROTE parts of how the client handles user data, which should clear up “lots of little state desync issues or location bugs,” especially around the Send Invite and Request Invite buttons. Avatars now REMEMBER the last Look worn with them. Creators get one new TOOL inside the client: a “Net Tools” debug page that shows network events, what halted an UdonBehaviour, and an UdonBehaviour network inspector. That helps DIAGNOSE worlds already shipped. It is NOT a path onto Unity 6.
Why it matters
VRChat is one of the LARGEST social VR platforms, and it is free on Steam, Quest, and mobile. Engine MIGRATIONS on platforms built from user content usually BREAK in the creator pipeline, not the player client. VRChat has chosen to ship the client half FIRST and HOLD the SDK until it is ready. The question to WATCH is how LONG that gap lasts. Until VRChat names an SDK date, every new world and avatar is still being built for an engine the client NO LONGER runs.
